Explanation

Gambling and wrangling, says Avvaiyar, bring only pain. Gambling destroys wealth; wrangling destroys relationships. Both drag a person on with the illusion of 'just one more win'.

Today gambling comes in many forms, and arguments run on endlessly online. Stepping away from both is the road to peace of mind.

Rig Veda, Book 10 (the Gambler's Hymn)

The Gambler's Lament

From the Gambler's Hymn of the Rig Veda. It is a lament sung by a gambler himself. 'My wife never quarrelled with me; she was kind to me and my friends. Yet for a single throw of the dice I lost that devoted wife.'

'My mother-in-law hates me, my wife pushes me away, and no one helps a man in trouble. I am worth no more than an old horse. The dice lure like honey, and then they bite.'

At the end of the hymn comes the counsel of the god Savitr: 'Do not play with dice. Plough your field. Delight in the wealth that labour brings and value it.' A thousand years before Avvaiyar, the Veda said the same thing.
