Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya KandaRama Goes to the Forest for His Father's Word
From the Valmiki Ramayana. On the morning set for Rama's coronation, Kaikeyi called him and told him of the two boons Dasharatha had granted her: the kingdom for Bharata and fourteen years of exile in the forest for Rama.
Dasharatha, overcome with grief, could not even speak. Without the slightest change in his face, Rama said, 'For my father's word I would enter fire, drink poison or drown in the sea. Going to the forest is nothing to me.'
That very day he put off his royal robes, dressed in bark and set out for the forest. His father's word was his mantra.
