Meaning

White Moon! In the midst of the boundless ocean of the sky you shine like an island that gives joy to the eye. How shall I describe the way your light here intoxicates, mingling word and wine and heart! I have seen many kinds of good light, but never one that makes me forget waking itself. A wine equal to a nectar that kills has come and joined with your light here!

They compare women's faces to you; but those are spoiled by age, worry and illness. The beauty of the face a young beloved offers, seeking a kiss - she of youthful age, with brows like Manmatha's bow, with a smile ripened by welling love - how wondrous that it shines forever on your cool face, with no death or decay!

I saw you and the nectar rise on the Milk Ocean that is your light. I saw that Mayan (Vishnu), who abides in all enduring things, resting on that Milk Ocean. They say Parashakti of deep blue colour is herself the world that appears here; I saw you shining beautifully with Ganga on the braided, cloud-like locks (of Shiva).

They say you scorch the hearts of lovers; but to the hearts of those who love you, you are sweet nectar. In the cool, jewelled, long pool of the sky you are like a radiant white lotus. Even to the host of dark clouds that come to strike you, you give the light of pearl and make them lovely. Are not the noble those who do good and give light even to the wicked who come to harm them?

When you hide behind a thin veil of cloud, the beauty of your form shows even more - as a fine thin garment covering the form of graceful Yavana women shows its beauty all the more. It seems you were shy at the words I spoke - you have hidden your whole shining face! Forgive the fault of this lowly one; drive away the darkness and show your beauty, White Moon!

Explanation

This is Bharathiyar's loveliest song to the moon. Each line ending in the call 'Vennilave!' sounds like the natural speech of someone singing while gazing at the moon.

The song slowly moves into sacred visions. Moonlight is the Milk Ocean; from it rose the Moon and the nectar (in the Puranic churning of the ocean, the Moon is born from the Milk Ocean); on it Vishnu sleeps; on Shiva's matted locks the crescent shines with Ganga. In the one moon, Vaishnava, Shaiva and Shakta visions are seen together.

The moral of the song: 'Are not the noble those who do good and give light even to the wicked who come to harm them?' The moon gives pearl-light even to the dark cloud that comes to hide it - a beautiful image of the Tirukkural's 'Punish those who harm you by shaming them with kindness'. At the end the moon, shy at the poet's praise, hides behind a cloud, and the song closes with gentle humour.

To reflect on

The moon gives pearl-light even to the cloud that comes to hide it. Could you give light to someone who came to harm you?
