Meaning

(A song of sacrifice) Let us tend the fire! Let us tend the great fire!

Within the soul and amid the intellect, let us grow love; let us grow longing for heaven; let us grow eagerness for joy. The son of the Goddess, the god of capability, the heavenly one like the red sun, he who calls the gods to the honey (Soma) - let us gather in a great host and bow to him. Come!

He who is firmness of mind, the companion of men, the destroyer of evil, he who gathers and gives good, he of many glories, the leader of the Aryas who shines so that the whole earth is lit, the beloved son of Rudra - let us become a great host and bow to him. Come!

He who removes bonds and gives freedom, dear as the apple of the eye, he who guards us, he who destroys the forest of troubles - so that fame may grow high in all eight directions, so that all arts may be mastered, so that joy may increase on earth, let us come in a great host and bow. Come!

He who removes all the worries and pains of the heart, he who gives long life, the great fire of shining rectitude, he who every day says 'Fear not, fear not' and forges good manliness in us, he who makes many victories - let us become a great host and bow. Come!

The heavenly one who burns fear and destroys it without even ash, the flame of intelligence that accomplishes action, the great unobstructed power, the fire of tapas that kindles light within us, mingling will, desire, longing, love and fitting good dharma - let us come in a great host and bow. Come!

The flame that surges up saying 'I will go and touch the sky', the good nectar of poets, he who knows the art of work, he who here eats and is filled and rejoices in good honey, milk, ghee, rice and all sweet fruits - let us gather in a great host and bow. Come!

He who stands forward to give here painted mansions, gold-gleaming terraces, divine maidens, honey-sweet music that fills with joy, good youth that knows taste, and many full pots brimming with fine pearls, gems and gold - let us swarm in a great host and bow. Come!

Explanation

This is a Tamil form of the Vedic hymns to Agni. The Rig Veda opens with 'agnim ile purohitam' - 'I praise Agni, the one placed in front of the sacrifice'. The qualities of Agni in the song all come from the Veda: he who calls the gods to the sacrifice (the divine messenger), the friend of men (Mitra), the son of Rudra (Agni is himself called 'Rudra' in the Veda), he who eats the honey, milk, ghee and rice offered in the sacrifice, the giver of wealth ('ratnadhatamam').

But Bharathiyar's fire does not burn only outside: it is a fire tended 'within the soul and amid the intellect'. In Sri Aurobindo's reading of the Veda, Agni is the conscious force, the divine will rising in man. That fire 'burns fear and destroys it without even ash', and forges courage by saying 'Fear not'. The repeated 'let us gather in a great host' shows this is a song for collective worship - a fire of wisdom tended by the whole nation together.

To reflect on

He asks us to tend the fire 'within the soul and amid the intellect'. What fire within you needs to be kept from going out?
