Meaning
'God came and died on the cross; on the third day he rose again' - loving Mary Magdalene saw this news with her own eyes. People of the land! Hear its inner meaning: if we kill our own ego, God will come and enter into us and guard us forever without perishing.
See, Mary Magdalene is love; know that Jesus Christ is the spirit. If first the form of evil is killed, in three days the good life appears. Seeing that good life in a face shining like gold, Mary Magdalene, who is love, will praise it. Aha! This is the greatest joy!
If we bind ourselves on the cross called truth and nail the senses with the nail called tapas, Jesus Christ, the generous great life, will shine there in a heavenly body. See, Mary Magdalene is womanhood; Jesus Christ is the good dharma we keep. Know that this is a subtle meaning; it can be practised in a moment.

Explanation
Bharathiyar reads the story of Jesus through the eyes of a Vedantin. For him it is not only a historical event but a figure of the spiritual event that must happen within every person. The cross is truth; the nails are tapas; the death is the destruction of the ego; the resurrection is the awakening of the soul; Magdalene is love and womanhood. It is another form of the Upanishadic truth that when the ego dies, the Self shines.
The roots of this view are in our own tradition: the Rig Veda's 'ekam sat vipra bahudha vadanti' (Truth is one; the wise call it by many names) and the Gita's 'ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamy aham' (in whatever way people come to me, in that way I receive them). Swami Vivekananda and Sri Ramakrishna honoured all faiths in the same spirit. 'It can be practised in a moment' - this inner crucifixion can happen in an instant.
To reflect on
'If we kill our ego, God will enter into us' - which part of your ego needs to go to the 'cross' today?
