Meaning

Help from kin is like the water that reaches a green crop below a tank that never fills: a little now and then, while the kin themselves mostly doze. But those who strive, their eyes ever alert like a sword-dancer's, do they ever lack anything?

Word by word

a tank that never fills
like the green crop below
kin give a little
kin mostly doze
like the sword-dancer's eyes
do the industrious lack anything?

Explanation

Living on others' help is like a crop that depends on a tank that never fills. One who relies on his own effort lacks nothing.

The sword-dancer's eye never slips for a moment; neither does the attention of one who strives.

The Ramayana, Bala Kanda

Bhagiratha Brings Down the Ganga

From the Ramayana. The sixty thousand sons of King Sagara had been burned to ash by the sage Kapila, and only the waters of the heavenly Ganga could free their souls. Sagara's grandson Anshuman tried and failed; his son Dilipa tried and failed.

Then Dilipa's son Bhagiratha gave up his kingdom and stood in penance for thousands of years until Ganga agreed to descend. When she warned that the earth could not bear her fall, he did penance again until Shiva agreed to catch her in his matted hair. When she was lost in Shiva's locks, he prayed once more. At last she followed his chariot across the land to the ashes of his ancestors. To this day, unceasing effort is called "Bhagiratha prayatna."

To reflect on

Your own effort is the tank that never fails.
