Meaning

With our conch-shell bangles crying out and our anklets ringing, with the garlands round our long hair swaying, with lips like red fruit trembling, you women of fine jewels, sing of Siva's world! For the feet of the Lord whose crown of clustered matted hair holds the roaring Ganga and the hissing serpent, with love welling up and breasts heaving, let us pound the sacred golden powder!

Explanation

In the Lord's matted hair live the Ganga, the serpent and the crescent moon together; things that are natural enemies live at peace in him. The Siva Purana tells how the Ganga came down from heaven with such force that the earth could not have borne it, so the Lord caught her in his hair and, moved by Bhagiratha's penance, let her flow out gently.

'With love welling up' is the inner heart of service. Service done not out of duty but out of overflowing love is what pleases the Lord. The women pound with hearts brimming over.

Koyil Puranam (Umapathi Sivacharyar); Chidambara Mahatmya; temple tradition of Thillai

The Two Sages Who Saw the Dance at Thillai

Long ago Thillai was a forest of thillai trees, and the sage Vyaghrapada lived there. He wanted to pick fresh flowers for the Lord's worship before dawn, before any bee had touched them. So he asked for a tiger's feet to climb trees in the dark, a tiger's claws so the thorns would not hurt him, and eyes that could see at night. That is why he is called the tiger-footed sage.

At the same time, in the ocean of milk, the great serpent Adisesha, Vishnu's bed, heard Vishnu speak with delight of the Lord's dance, and he longed to see it too. Born as Patanjali, half man and half serpent, he came to Thillai to do penance. The two sages worshipped together for many years.

On the day of Poosam in the month of Thai, the Lord appeared with Uma and danced the dance of bliss in the golden hall. One foot raised, a drum in one hand and fire in another, one hand saying 'do not fear' and another pointing to the lifted foot, he danced. The two sages stood weeping. They prayed that this dance might go on here forever, and the Lord granted it. From that day the Lord of Thillai has never stopped dancing. Manikkavasagar spent his last years at Thillai, and seeing the women pound powder at festival time, he sang 'for the bath of the one who dances in the Hall, let us pound the golden powder.'
