Meaning

So that I might praise and serve him for many days, the Great One set his flower feet close against my body. Coming as a beautiful light, he took me, as if peeling fibre from a stone. Singing of how his two feet became gold for me, let us go and pick flowers from the flowering creepers!

Explanation

'Peeling fibre from a stone' appeared in Thiruthellenam as well: he drew love out of a heart of stone. 'He set his feet close against my body' is the experience of the Guru's touch, sparsha diksha, initiation by touch.

'His feet became gold' says those feet became worth more to Manikkavasagar than gold. For one who has given up worldly wealth, the Lord's feet are the true treasure.

Kandha Puranam (Kachiyappa Sivacharyar), the Daksha Kandam; Siva Mahapurana

Daksha's Sacrifice and Virabhadra

Daksha, son of Brahma, was a lord of creation. His daughter Dakshayani did penance to win Siva as her husband and married him. Once, when Daksha entered an assembly of the gods, Siva did not rise to greet him. Feeling insulted, Daksha came to hate Siva.

Later Daksha held a great sacrifice. He invited every god and sage but sent Siva neither an invitation nor his share of the offering. The sage Dadhichi warned that a sacrifice without Siva was worthless and walked out. Dakshayani wanted to attend her father's sacrifice; Siva tried to stop her, but she would not listen. There Daksha mocked both her and Siva, and unable to bear it, Dakshayani gave up her life in the sacrificial fire.

When Siva heard, he tore a lock from his matted hair and dashed it to the ground. From it arose thousand-armed Virabhadra, and from Uma's fury arose Bhadrakali. With the hosts of spirits they destroyed the sacrifice. Daksha's head was cut off, the sun's teeth were broken, the moon was crushed, Agni's hand was cut, and Yajna, the god of the sacrifice, fled in the form of a deer and lost his head too. Then the gods took refuge in Siva. Moved, the Lord gave Daksha the head of a ram and restored his life, and forgave the gods. Dakshayani was born again as Parvati, daughter of the Mountain King, and married Siva once more. In Thiruppoovalli and Thiruchazhal Manikkavasagar sings this story again and again: the pride that shut out the Lord was broken, and grace returned to those who bowed.
