With fine coral for its posts and pearls for its ropes, seated happily on a beautiful golden plank: let us sing the two gracious feet of the never-cloying nectar of Uthirakosamangai, who gives me, a dog, his fresh-flower feet that even Narayana could not know, as my very own home town.

Explanation

Thirupponnoosal sings of the Lord of Uthirakosamangai, in the form of a song girls sing on the swing. The swing is imagined with posts of coral, ropes of pearl and a plank of gold.

'He gives his feet to me as my home town' is a lovely phrase: the Lord's feet are the devotee's true home, wherever in the world one may be. 'Never-cloying nectar' is nectar that never palls, however much one drinks.

Sthala Purana of Uthirakosamangai; temple tradition

The Emerald Nataraja of Uthirakosamangai

Uthirakosamangai, near Ramanathapuram, is one of the most ancient Siva shrines; people say it is so old that no one knows whether the earth or the shrine came first. The Lord here is Mangalanathar and the Mother is Mangaleswari. Temple tradition says that here the Lord taught Uma the secret inner meaning (uttaram) of the Vedas, and that the name comes from this teaching.

Mandodari, wife of Ravana, was a great devotee of Siva. Tradition says she did penance here longing to see the Lord, and that he came and sat on her lap as a little child. The temple is still honoured in memory of her love.

The Nataraja here is carved from a single emerald. Because emerald is said to be sensitive to sound and light, the image is kept covered in sandal paste all year. Only on Margazhi Thiruvathirai is the covering removed and the emerald form shown to devotees, and that same day a fresh coat of sandal paste is applied; crowds come to receive the old paste as a healing gift. Manikkavasagar sang Neethal Vinnappam at this shrine, and in Thirupponnoosal he sings again of the feet of this 'never-cloying nectar'. Tradition says the Lord who came as Guru at Perunthurai appeared to him again at Uthirakosamangai and blessed him.
