Meaning

Those who think themselves wise yet cry out 'O lovely one of dark-gold skin!', do they not see that this body is a flimsy hut? If even a patch of skin the size of a fly's wing came away, you would need a stick to drive off the crows.

Explanation

Only the thin cover of skin makes the body look beautiful. If a little of it came away, crows would gather.

This chapter shows the body as it really is, to loosen the infatuation with it.

The life of Tulsidas (Bhaktamal tradition)

Ratnavali's Rebuke

From the life of Tulsidas. As a young man Tulsidas was so attached to his wife Ratnavali that when she went to visit her parents, he crossed a flooded river at night and climbed into her house to see her.

Ashamed, Ratnavali said: "This body of bone and skin you are so attached to, if you had even half this love for Rama, you would be free of all fear." The words struck him like an arrow. He left that night, gave his life to Rama, and in time wrote the Ramcharitmanas. The body we cling to is not the thing worth clinging to.

To reflect on

Beauty is only skin deep.
