Meaning

If this body, fed even on food begged in shame, would stand firm and last for ever, then I would throw off the rare jewel of honour and live by the disgrace of begging. (But it will not last, so why bear that shame?)

Explanation

The particle 'man' signals that this will never happen. If the body would last, one might bear disgrace; but it will not.

To lose undying honour for a body that dies is folly.

To reflect on

Do not sell lasting honour for a body that will not last.
