Meaning

As a turtle sports in the water, never knowing where it stands, while the hunters heat their furnace and kindle the fire — so is the grandeur of those who swell with pride inside this net of a world, while the great Death, skilled in killing, keeps watch for its catch.

Explanation

The image carries a bitter contradiction. The hunters heat their furnace, and the turtle plays in the water, knowing nothing of it. Its ignorance is not its fault, but the outcome is the same.

That image is then laid on human beings. 'This net of a world' is the telling phrase: life is a net, and every creature is caught in it. To swell with pride inside such a condition is not just ignorance; it is a performance. The verse scolds no one; it shows a state. One who sees it stops boasting and grows quiet instead.

Puranic tradition (the story of Bhasmasura)

Bhasmasura's Own Hand

From Puranic tradition. The asura Vrika (Bhasmasura) did fierce penance to Shiva and won a boon: whoever he touched on the head would turn to ash. His first thought was to test it on Shiva himself, so that he could carry off Parvati.

Shiva fled, and Vishnu came to the rescue as the enchantress Mohini. Bhasmasura was dazzled and begged her to marry him. She agreed, if he would first dance exactly as she danced. He copied every step, and when Mohini placed her hand on her own head, he did the same and was burned to ash. The fool turns the greatest gift into the means of his own ruin.

To reflect on

To boast inside a net is not only ignorance; it is a performance.
