Meaning
Hail the five syllables, Namasivaya. Hail the feet of my lord. Hail the feet of him who never leaves my heart even for the blink of an eye. Hail the feet of the jewel of a guru who claimed me at Gokazhi. Hail the feet of him who became the Agamas and through them draws near and grows sweet. Hail the feet of the Lord who is one and many. Victory to the feet of the king who stilled the rushing of my mind and ruled me. Victory to the anklets of the matted-haired one who cuts off birth. Victory to the flowered feet of him who is far from those who stand outside. Victory to the feet of the king who rejoices within those who fold their hands. Victory to the feet of the glorious one who raises up those who bow their heads.
Praise to the feet of Eesan; praise to the feet of my father; praise to the feet of the radiant one; praise to the red feet of Siva; praise to the feet of the pure one who stands in love; praise to the feet of the king who cuts off this deluding birth; praise to the feet of our god of glorious Perunthurai; praise to the mountain who grants bliss that never cloys.
Because Siva stands within my mind, by his grace alone I bow at his feet and, with a glad heart, recite this Sivapuranam so that all my past karma may wear away. The one with the eye on his forehead came to show me his eye of grace, and I bowed at his beautiful feet, which thought cannot reach. O light that fills the sky and fills the earth and shines beyond them, O boundless one beyond all measure, I, a man of evil deeds, do not know how to praise your great glory.
As grass, as shrub, as worm, as tree, as many kinds of beast, as bird, as snake, as stone, as human, as ghost, as Siva's attendant hosts, as mighty asura, as sage, as god, in every birth among the moving and unmoving things of this world I have been born and grown weary, my Lord. Today, in truth, I have seen your golden feet and reached release. O true one, who stood within my heart as Om that I might be saved; O spotless one; O rider of the bull; O subtle one whom the Vedas seek, crying 'Lord', rising high, sinking deep and spreading wide; O fierce one, O gentle one, O pure one who is also the soul that offers sacrifice; O true flame who came in grace so that all that is false might leave, and shines as true wisdom; O lord of bliss to me who had no wisdom at all; O good knowledge that drives away ignorance.
O you who have no origin, no measure and no end: you create all the worlds, you keep them, you dissolve them, you give grace. You will send me out of birth and bring me into your service. O you who are as subtle as fragrance, far away and near at hand, the Veda's meaning that stands beyond word and mind. Like milk fresh from the cow mixed with cane juice and ghee, you well up like honey in the minds of your true devotees and cut off the births they have taken. O you of the five colours, who stayed hidden even while the gods praised you.
My Lord, you bound me, a man of hard karma, with the deluding darkness that hid the truth, tied with the strong rope of merit and sin, covered with skin, crawling with worms and filth: a hut of nine doorways oozing waste. While the five senses deceived and confused me, with a mind like a beast's, I had no goodness that could melt and flow toward you, pure one, in mingled love. Yet you gave me grace, came down upon this earth, showed me your long feet, and to me, who lay lower than a dog, you showed a mercy greater than a mother's, O truth itself.
O spotless light, O flame like a full-blown flower, O radiant one, O nectar full of honey, O lord of Sivapuram, O teacher who cuts the clinging bond of pasam and protects; O great river of compassion who never left me, showing loving grace so that the deceit in my heart might perish; O nectar that never cloys, O lord beyond measure, O light that hides in the hearts of those who do not seek you, O you who melted me like water and stood as my precious life; O you who have neither joy nor sorrow, O you who are in all; O lover of those who love; O you who are all things and are no thing; O light, O thick darkness, O greatness that does not show itself; O first, O you who became the end and the middle and are beyond them; O my father and lord, who drew me to you and claimed me.
O vision hard to see even in the minds of those who know you by keen true wisdom; O subtle awareness too fine to grasp; O holy one with no going, no coming and no joining; O guardian who protects me; O great light hard to behold; O river in flood with bliss; O father; O radiant light of all that appears, rising above it all; O awareness too fine for words; O clear one who comes as knowing, in many ways, in this ever-changing world; O clarity of clarity; O nectar sweet to taste that wells up as a spring in my mind; O you who own me.
I cannot bear to lie in this changing body of flesh, my lord, O Haran! So crying 'O!' again and again, those who praised and extolled you lost their falsehood and became true, and you are the one able to break the bonds of this thieving hut of the senses, so that they never come back here into a birth made by karma. O lord who dances, practised in the dance of the deep night; O dancer of Thillai; O lord of the southern Pandya land; O destroyer of this birth of sorrow! Those who speak of him who is hard to speak of, crying 'O!', who understand the meaning of this song sung at his feet and recite it, will go, bowing, while many praise them, into Sivapuram, beneath the feet of Siva.
