Meaning
The swarming spheres of the universe, measureless in nature and rich and vast to behold, if one tells the beauty of each standing beside the next, spread out beyond a hundred and one crores. Consider him so great that they become as small as the crowded specks of dust in a sunbeam entering a house. The company of Brahmas and the multitude of Vishnus, origin and glory joined with ending, the great ages, their passing and their staying, the subtle and the gross: like wind flung about in a whirlwind, he spins them and moves them, the beautiful one. He is the ancient one who creates all; the God who protects what is created; the God who withdraws what is protected; the God whose purpose in withdrawal is beyond thought. He stands as liberation for the followers of all six holy faiths. Before him the hosts of the gods are like worms. Day by day he placed the light in the sun; he set coolness in the holy moon; he made heat in mighty fire; he gave the true sky its all-pervading nature; he gave the excellent wind its force; he set sweet taste in water where shadows shine; he set firmness plainly in the earth. In this way, in countless crores and countless other things, he set each thing in its place.
And more. Behold the first one; behold the whole one; behold that he who has no equal is himself alone. Behold him who wears the ancient tusk of the boar; behold him with the forest tiger's skin about his waist; behold him smeared with holy ash. Each time I think of him, each time, I cannot bear it; alas, I am undone! Behold him who plays on the sweet-toned veena; behold him who knows that music there itself. Behold the Supreme; behold the Ancient; behold the great one whom Brahma and Vishnu could not see; behold the wondrous one; behold the many; behold the ancient one beyond the reach of words; behold him so far that even the mind cannot go; behold him who is caught in the net of devotion; behold him who is ever the One; behold him who spread out as the whole wide world; behold the Lord who is subtler than an atom; behold Eesan of matchless greatness; behold him rarer than the rarest of the rare; behold him who dwells in every thing and makes it grow; behold the subtle one whom book-learning cannot grasp; behold him who spread above and below; behold him beyond end and beginning; behold him who creates both bondage and release; behold him who became what stands and what moves; behold him who has seen the ages and their end; behold Eesan whom all may reach; behold Siva whom even the gods do not know; behold him who is woman, man and neither. Behold, I too have seen him with my eyes. Behold the nectar that pours out grace. Behold, I have seen the greatness of compassion. Behold, he touched me with his red feet that walk this world. Behold, I too have come to know that he is Siva. Behold, he has claimed me and given me grace. Behold him whose half is she of the lily eyes. Behold her and him together.
The ancient ocean of supreme bliss rose as a great dark cloud, climbed the hill of holy Perunthurai, spread its lovely lightning in every direction, sent the cruel snakes of the five senses' bonds fleeing, hid the great heat of the summer of fierce sorrow, made its beauty glow like the bright red velvet insects of the rains, grew angry at our births, roared with great compassion like a beaten drum, made the kanthal flowers of folded hands open, poured fine drops of unfailing sweet grace, filled every direction with a flood of red light, rose up to the hills and swelled till the pool of sorrow was helpless. Herds of long-eyed deer, seeing the mirage of the six faiths and coming in thirst for water, drank with the great mouth of austerity and still wavered, their great futile thirst unquenched. Then that flood leapt into the great river of the sky, rose up, threw up great whirlpools of bliss, swirled, struck and battered the great banks of our bondage, tore up by the root the great tree of our twofold karma that had grown age after age, and rose. So that the water of grace should not run off, he built a high dam of rare mountain sandal, made the mouth of the tank with fragrant flowers dripping honey, and seeing the tank where bees swarm and the thick smoke of agil reaches the banks fill higher and higher with joy, he sowed love as seed in the field of worship and gave the harvest in full to the farmers who are his servants. Long live that cloud, so hard to win in all the universe.
Long live the God who wears the black-hooded snake as a girdle. Long live the First, who gives grace to those of hard penance. Long live the warrior who took away my fear. Long live him who draws me and claims me every day. Long live him who wipes away the sorrow of surrounding darkness. Long live him who gives rare nectar to those who reach him. Long live him who bends in the dance in the thick darkness. Long live the beloved of her with shoulders like the great bamboo. Long live our Lord who is a stranger to those who are strangers to him. Long live the treasure kept for his lovers in their weariness. Praise to the Lord who made the poisonous snake dance. Praise to the great one who made us mad for him. Praise to him who can appear with holy ash. He makes walk what walks in the four directions, makes lie what lies, makes stand what stands; the ancient one beyond the reach of words; not to be held even by the feeling of the heart; not seen by the eye or any sense; who set out the elements beginning with the sky; whose greatness, like the fragrance in a flower, rises and fills all places without a gap: today he came near to me and made this perishing body pass away, that shining truth. Praise to him who came near to me today and stayed. Praise to him who made a body that gives love. Praise to him who is a spring within and gladdens the heart. Praise to you who blossomed as unbearable bliss. I can no longer bear to carry a body that does not praise you.
With a golden glow like lightning, like a heap of emeralds and a mass of great gems, he hid from the four-faced Brahma who went searching; hid from those who strove by meditating in due order; hid from those who stood firm, suffering with hearts bent on oneness; hid from those who toiled over the Vedas; hid in that very path from those who said 'by this path we will see him'; from those who looked without anger and held him close, he appeared as a man, changed into neither, and hid as a woman with a shining brow; far away, he hid well even in the vision of those of hard penance who left the five senses, went to every remote hill and gave up even food until their bodies held bare life; he hid even in the knowing that says 'there is something' or 'there is nothing'. We have found the thief who hides each time he is sought, in the past and today! 'Bind him, bind him! Tie his feet with a garland of fresh flowers! Surround him, close in, follow him, do not let him go, seize him!' and he hid even from the grasp of those who cried so.
Then he came and told those like me how he who has no equal is himself alone, called out and claimed me, and showed himself in the form of a Brahmin. With unfailing love my very bones melted; I cried out, rose and roared like the waves of the sea, fell headlong, rolled and wailed, swooned like a madman and reeled like one drunk, so that the people were bewildered and those who heard were amazed. Like an elephant in great must that will not yield to the goad, I could not contain myself. He made me of honeycomb, so that every limb tasted sweetness. As once he dropped the ancient cities of his foes into the fire of his beautiful smile, that day, in the great fire of grace, he destroyed the bodily huts of his servants, not one left out. He became as plain to me as a gooseberry in the palm of the hand. I do not know what to say. Bless you! Is this fair? I cannot bear it. I do not know what he has done to me, a dog. Ah, ah, I am dead! I do not know what he has given his servant. I drink and am not filled; I swallow and cannot finish. Like the waves of the rich cool ocean of milk, like sweet water welling up in the middle of the salt sea, he made nectar beyond words pool in every pore of my skin. Into every hut of my wretched body grown with flesh, into this dog's body, he poured sweet honey and sent streams of wondrous nectar through every hollow of my bones. As those whose hearts melt shape an image, he formed for me a body in which love wells up. Like an elephant seeking a shining fruit of sugarcane, he at last made even me into something. So that the heavenly honey of compassion mingled within me, he made me the supreme nectar together with grace: he whose greatness Brahma and Vishnu do not know.
