Meaning
The Lord whose holy feet danced in the ancient town of Thillai mingled with all the many lives, shone in beauty with countless qualities, brought forth and dissolved the earth, the sky, the world of the gods and all the learning bound up with them, drove away my darkness completely, and made his home in the hearts of his devotees so that their love overflowed. These are his ways and his glories:
On the great and lasting Mount Mahendra he revealed the Agamas he had spoken. At Kalladam he dwelt in sweetness and grew close to the gracious Goddess. At Panchappalli he brought forth unending grace with her whose speech is like milk. In a hunter's guise he stayed beside her whose lips are red as the kinjuka flower. He became a fisherman and caught the great fish. He received the Agamas that had come through a great hunt. From Mahendra he gave the other Agamas through his five faces. At Nandampadi he sat as a Brahmin of the four Vedas, a teacher without end.
Taking form after form and nature after nature, a hundred hundred thousand kinds, the Lord who rides the bull came with the Goddess who is his half, so that this world might be saved. He led horses as the head of a merchant caravan into the western land. At Velamputhur he gave the spear and showed his glorious form. At Santhamputhur he gave grace to a bow-bearing hunter through a mirror. At Mokkani he showed his body of pure fire as gold. He whom Vishnu and Brahma could not measure did the kindness of turning jackals into horses.
He of the beautiful feet, to claim me, sold horses to the Pandya and did not even take the gold due for them, so that I might stand in the way of grace of my Lord who rules me, and he showed a blazing light. He came as a Brahmin, claimed me and showed a wonder like magic. In great Madurai he became a horseman's servant, and there for his devotee he carried earth. At Uthirakosamangai he showed the guise of wisdom. At Poovanam he showed a body of pure gold. At Vadhavur he let me hear the ringing anklets of his feet. As the treasure of glorious Perunthurai he hid in the light that was the very womb of things. At Poovalam he destroyed sin. He set up a water pavilion in triumph and became a servant giving good water. As a guest at Venkadu he sat beneath the kurundha tree. At Pattamangai he granted the eight great siddhis. As a hunter in the form he wished he hid in the forest. Showing the truth, he took the form he wished and came as a worthy man. At Oriyur he came gladly as a little boy. He stayed at Pandur. On the shining island south of Thevur he took the form of a king. At Thiruvarur of honey-filled groves he gave wisdom. At Idaimaruthu he stayed and set down his feet. At Ekambam he became one whose half is woman. At Thiruvanjiyam he rejoiced with the Goddess of fragrant tresses. As a warrior with a mighty bow he showed many guises. He made his place at Kadambur. On Eengoy hill he showed his beauty. At Aiyaru he became a Saiva. At Thurutthi he stayed with longing. At Thiruppanaiyur he became the beloved. At Kazhumalam he gave his vision. At Kazhukkunram he stayed without fail. At Purambayam he taught many dharmas. At Kutralam he stood as a sign.
Hiding his form of fire whose greatness has no end, taking in a beautiful guise the one first form, coming like magic, bringing everyone's nature under his sway and himself becoming all, is our compassionate Lord. At Chandradeepam he became the teacher of the scriptures, came down from the sky and stayed close in beauty in a lovely desert land. And if I tell how he, the lord of the great mountain of mantras, Mahendra, the noble one of endless greatness and grace, ruled us:
In his mighty and beautiful form he raised the mark of holy ash and showed it. He gave bliss itself as the way that cuts off every flaw at once. The compassionate one who shares his body with the Goddess let the great drum of sacred sound resound. He who rules and gives grace so that no stain clings took up the lowly ones in his hand. The pure-bodied, blazing light that cuts the three root bonds became a lover and wore a garland of red water lilies on his bull for beauty. He whom Vishnu and Brahma could not measure rode upon a horse. For him who grants the road of no return, the Pandya land is his ancient home. For him who brings devotees to the highest state, Uthirakosamangai is his town. 'God of gods, who gave grace even to the first deities' is his holy name, and 'mountain of grace who gave greatness' is his name, he whose blissful mount drove away darkness.
Having ruled every kind of greatness and every kind of person in this way, he said to me, a dog of a man, 'Come to the beautiful hall in Thillai, rich in all good', and left me here. That day the graced devotees who went with him merged into him, one with one. Those who could not reach him leapt into fire, went mad with longing, rolled on the ground and wailed, ran with racing feet and plunged into the sea, wept and cried 'Lord, Lord!', and those who reached his feet reached his feet. While those stood and yearned whose hearts failed, crying 'Supreme dancer who gave grace to Patanjali!', the Lord, with a lovely little smile on the holy face that gave grace to Kali along with Uma of fruit-red lips, who dances in the hall at Puliyur shining with gold as fine as the Himalaya, entered beautiful Puliyur with his gathered devotees and gave grace there. He is the high lord of resounding Kailasa.
