Meaning

These gods, our own, once ate the ram at Daksha's sacrifice when death was near them; in terror of the ocean's poison they cried 'Alas, our father!' and they are the ones who pour oblations. Yet they count themselves with our Lord as 'the three', rule the sky, and strut upon the earth proudly calling themselves gods. What sin is this!

Explanation

When Daksha held a sacrifice without inviting Siva, all the gods went and ate their share of the offerings. Veerabhadra came and destroyed the sacrifice. When the ocean of milk was churned and the halahala poison rose, those same gods ran to Siva wailing; Siva drank the poison, held it in his throat and became Neelakantha, the blue-throated one. The Kandha Puranam and the Siva Purana tell both stories at length.

For gods whom the Lord saved like this to count themselves his equals is, the poet says, a great sin. In Saiva Siddhanta, Brahma, Vishnu and the other gods are also souls, holding their offices by Siva's grace. The Supreme is Siva alone.

Thiruvathavurar Puranam of Kadavul Mamunivar; Thiruvilaiyadal Puranam of Paranjothi Munivar

Left Alone Beneath the Kurundha Tree

Vathavurar, chief minister of the Pandya king, set out with royal gold to buy horses. At Perunthurai he saw a guru seated beneath a kurundha tree, surrounded by devotees. The moment the guru placed his foot on Vathavurar's head in initiation, the minister forgot himself. His post, the king's errand and the gold in his care no longer mattered. Songs poured from his lips like gems, and the guru named him Manikkavasagar, 'he whose words are rubies'.

For a time he lived with the guru and his devotees. Then one day the guru called the devotees and said, 'A fire will rise in that pond. Plunge into it and come to me.' Turning to Manikkavasagar, he said, 'You stay here and raise this temple; afterwards come to Thillai.' And he vanished. The devotees all entered that light and merged with the Lord. Manikkavasagar alone was left standing on the bank.

With his guru and companions gone, he fell senseless, rolled on the ground and wept: 'Why did you leave me behind?' Thiruchathagam was born from the pain of that parting. Lines such as 'were there no other devotees?', 'falsehood and I were left outside' and 'you and your devotees went there and set me here' are memories of that day. Later the king imprisoned him, and the Lord rescued him by turning jackals into horses, flooding the Vaigai and taking a blow of the cane while carrying earth for its banks. At last Manikkavasagar merged with the Lord at Thillai. Thiruchathagam is the first cry of that long journey.
