Explanation

When a gambler loses money, in his hope of recovering it he tells lies, borrows, cheats, and secretly pawns household goods. These are the "many mean acts" of the verse, and through them his fame and esteem decline. Valluvar here combines three evils of gambling: it leads to mean deeds, it ruins good name, and it brings poverty. Nothing equals it, he says, in bringing poverty.

In the Mahabharata Shakuni defeated Yudhishthira with loaded dice. In the middle of the assembly Dushasana dragged Draupadi in and insulted her. The place where that cruelty happened was the gambling hall itself. Though Krishna protected Draupadi's honour, the fame of the Kauravas was destroyed that very day. This stands as the witness of the couplet. In the tradition of dharma, fame and honour are the fruit of good deeds, and gambling can spoil them in a single day.

Some commentators take "sirumai" as the lowliness of living on others' alms, and others as immoral deeds. Both describe the gambler's condition rightly. A man who wishes to guard his reputation must therefore keep far away from gambling.

Poverty is not merely the lack of money; the loss of trust is also a kind of poverty. The gambler reaches true poverty on the day he sees that his word carries no weight. Then relatives and friends hesitate to trust or help him. Fame is not built in a day but over years of good deeds, yet one small lie and one small meanness are enough to destroy it. A man who understands this gives desire no room.

A story

Disgrace in the Hall

In the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata, Yudhishthira, who had lost his brothers and himself at dice, staked Draupadi too through Shakuni's wiles and lost her. Duryodhana gleefully sent his brother Dushasana, saying, "Bring that slave woman here." Dushasana dragged Draupadi in by her hair, though she was in her days of seclusion.

In the assembly Draupadi asked in tears, "After he had lost himself, did Yudhishthira have the right to stake me?" Bhishma faltered, saying that dharma is subtle. Drona was silent. Only Vikarna stood up and supported her question. Karna silenced him. Duryodhana ordered Dushasana to strip Draupadi of her garment.

Dushasana began to pull at the saree. Draupadi raised both her hands and cried to Krishna, "Govinda, dweller of Dvaraka, protect me." By Krishna's grace the cloth grew endless. Dushasana fell exhausted. The elders seated in the hall bowed their heads. That day the fame of the Kauravas was shattered completely. Bhima swore to avenge the insult, and Arjuna remembered his Gandiva. Fear and silence filled the hall. Dhritarashtra, frightened, invited Draupadi to ask for boons.

When the game began they thought they would win a kingdom. But what they lost was greater: the infamy of a house that had insulted a woman. That infamy followed them to the war of Kurukshetra. Valluvar teaches us that gambling, which leads to mean acts and destroys fame, brings not only poverty but undying shame.
