Explanation

"Pazhagiya selvam" is wealth that has stayed in a family for many generations. Those who gathered it laboured; the one who received it must guard it. "Panbu", character, is the good conduct and tradition of the family. Together they make up a family's standing. Valluvar warns that a man who begins to spend his time in the gambling hall will spoil both. In the words "kaalai pugin" lies the sense that danger begins the moment one enters the hall.

It is Valluvar's subtlety to name character along with wealth. If wealth goes but character remains, wealth can be gathered again. But if character goes, wealth is useless even if one has it. In a gambling place there are no good friends; each person eyes another's money. That environment feeds selfishness and falsehood. A man long in such surroundings forgets the high qualities of his family.

In Hindu tradition kuladharma, the duty of the family line, is very important. It is the duty of children to protect the good name and wealth that came from their forefathers' good deeds. One who fails to do so becomes a debtor to his ancestors and to future generations. The couplet recalls that duty.

There is a further subtlety. Wealth can go in a moment, but character fades slowly, and the first hour spent in the hall is the beginning of that fading. If a young man thinks of how his forefathers lived, a barrier forms within him. He who respects that barrier will guard the family's fame. One who breaks it loses not only money but his father's name too.

A story

The Heritage of the Chettiar House

This is an imagined tale; its setting is a Nagarathar merchant family near Karaikudi.

Near Karaikudi a Nagarathar family had traded for eight generations. Their great mansion, their sacred works for temples and their help to the poor were famous throughout the town. When the head of the family, Vairavan Chettiar, died, his only son Subramanian took over the mansion and the business.

Subramanian found new friends, who met regularly at a gambling club. "Come for an hour, just for fun," they said. On the first day he stayed only an hour. By the third month he was there all day. The family accountant Kandasamy gently said, "Sir, this is not in our tradition," but Subramanian did not listen.

First the business income fell. Then old customers left. The usual donation for temple works stopped. People said, "The Chettiar house has changed." One day a part of the mansion was mortgaged. That day Subramanian stood before his father's portrait. The father's eyes in the picture seemed to look at him quietly.

He wept. He told Kandasamy, "What my forefathers gathered for eight generations I destroyed in a single year." From that day he never crossed the club's threshold. He rebuilt the business by his labour. It took ten years to redeem the mansion. In that time he rose every morning to worship at the family deity's temple and checked the account books himself. Kandasamy stood by him, and the townspeople slowly began to believe in his change. His son grew up hearing the story and raised the family tradition higher still.
