Explanation

The verse lists four consequences of gambling in order: loss of wealth, descent into falsehood, loss of compassion, and distress. First the gambler's money dwindles. In his hope of recovering it he gives up truth and begins to lie: he promises falsely to repay loans and hides from his family where he has been. When lying becomes a habit, pity leaves the heart as well. Compassion is the heart that feels another's pain, and a man sunk in worry over his money refuses even to see the sorrow of his wife and children. In the end he himself suffers.

The subtlety of the couplet is that each step leads to the next. When wealth goes, falsehood comes; when falsehood comes, compassion goes; when compassion goes, distress comes. In Hindu tradition truth and compassion are two pillars of dharma, and gambling tears down both. The Upanishads proclaim "satyameva jayate", truth alone triumphs; the one who seeks falsehood steps away from that victory. A man without love and pity cannot keep the peace of his home.

Some commentators take "arul" as the grace of God, in which case the gambler loses divine grace too. Either way, loss of wealth becomes the first doorway to every other loss. So even a small stake should be treated as that doorway, and one should keep away.

A story

The Clerk's Lie

This is an imagined tale; its setting is the administration of a village temple.

In a small town near Tiruvarur stood a Shiva temple. Its clerk Raghavan had served honestly for thirty years. He wrote down the hundi money and the worship expenses carefully every day. The elders trusted him completely. He was a family man, and his wife and two children depended on him.

At a festival some of his friends invited him to play dice. At first he refused. "Just once," the friends insisted. He played with his own money. Within a few days his whole salary was gone. To make it up he took a small sum from the temple hundi. "Next week I will win and put it back," he persuaded himself. But he never won.

In the account book he began to write false figures. Each lie produced the next. When his wife asked at home, "Why is there less money this month?" he shouted in irritation. His children shrank away in fear. He had become a man who could no longer see the suffering of others.

One day the temple priest noticed an error in the accounts and informed the elders. Raghavan confessed the truth and fell in tears before the Lord Shiva. The elders removed him from service. Yet by small earnings he repaid in full what was due to the temple. He told young men in his own words how he had lost wealth first, then truth, then pity, and last his peace of mind, and so warned them.
