Explanation

Valluvar here takes five things as a set: clothing, wealth, food, fame and learning. Clothing and food are the basic needs of bodily life. Wealth is the security of living. Fame is esteem in society. Learning is the growth of the mind. With all five a man lives fully in body, in means and in mind. The couplet says that for one who takes up gambling these five do not come. Because he is immersed in the game all day, he has no time to work or study; with money lost, clothing and food decline; and his good name fades.

It is notable that learning is placed last. Even if one loses the outward things, with learning one can rebuild a life. But the gambling mind does not settle into one point; it lacks the calm that study needs. He therefore loses even the power to build his future. In Hindu tradition knowledge, wealth and strength each have a goddess: Saraswati, Lakshmi and Durga. We may see figuratively that the gambler stands away from their grace.

Some commentators take "aayam kolin" to mean living on the income of the gambling house, that is, even one who makes gambling profit his livelihood will not gain these five. So playing and depending on its income come to the same thing.

A story

The Sastri's Pupil

This is an imagined tale; its setting is a Vedic school at Kumbakonam.

In the Vedic school run by Subbu Sastrigal at Kumbakonam many pupils studied. Among them a young man named Viswanathan had a very sharp mind. For five years he rose every morning and learnt the verses. The teacher was very fond of him. But he began playing dice with some new friends in the evenings on the bank of the Kaveri.

At first it was only pastime. Then the evenings stretched into nights. He rose late in the mornings. When he recited his lessons he forgot the verses. The teacher warned him, "Viswanatha, if you want learning, the mind must be one-pointed." He nodded but did not stop. In a few months all the money his father sent was gone at dice. His clothes grew dirty, and sometimes he did not even get two meals.

His name in the town faded. "Alas, he was such a good student," the elders lamented. One morning the teacher called him and said, "Clothing, food, wealth, fame and learning, you have lost all five at once. It will take five years to win them back." Hearing these words Viswanathan broke down and wept.

He fell at the teacher's feet and begged pardon. The teacher accepted him again. He rose before dawn every day to study. In a few years he became an excellent student once more. Later he himself ran a school and taught his pupils the evil of gambling.
