Explanation

The simile of this verse is simple and sharp. When a drum is beaten it spreads its sound as far as it can; it holds nothing within it. The base are just so. They cannot keep from telling others the secrets trustingly told to them. This shows their untrustworthiness. The drum, 'parai', served in Tamil lands as a means to announce news to the town. Royal orders, festivals and sad tidings were all announced by the drum. It was right for announcements; but if a man spreads secrets like that instrument, his relations perish. This is the caution Valluvar gives.

Keeping secrets is the mark of the good. That someone speaks his mind to us is a gift of trust. To break it is betrayal. In friendship, family and work, trust is the foundation. One who breaks it harms himself and others. In today's world of social media the sense of this verse grows sharper still. A small piece of news can spread across the world in a moment. A mind that respects privacy, secrecy and trust is needed today more than ever. What has been entrusted to us we must guard and not drum out.

Keeping secrets is a great skill in politics and in the family. When Valluvar says 'marai piraRku uythuraikkalaan' it carries two senses, announcing news and breaking trust. The drum is an instrument for announcing news; it cannot be placed where secrets are heard. So if a man makes his mouth a drum, no one will open his heart to him.

A story

The Drum and the Secret

In a small village near Vellore two families lived side by side. In one was a weaver, Sundaram. A problem arose in the marriage talks of his daughter Meena: Sundaram lacked the means to give the dowry the groom's family asked. He mortgaged his house land.

Sundaram told this secret only to his close friend Kannappar. 'Tell no one; the girl's future will suffer,' he said. Kannappar loved to gossip. That evening at the tea stall he told his friends, 'Our Sundaram has mortgaged even his land.'

By the next day the news had spread across the whole village. The groom's family, hearing it, doubted whether Sundaram could give more and came to the point of stopping the marriage talk. Sundaram's heart broke. He grieved that his friend had broken his trust.

Then Meena rose boldly. She went to the groom's family in person and said plainly, 'My father did not hide his state. He is honest. He mortgaged the land to protect the honour of our family. His greatness is that he did not conceal.' Her honesty and her father's truth moved the groom's family.

The wedding took place. But thereafter Sundaram did not speak to Kannappar. When Kannappar asked pardon he only said, 'I told the secret to a drum; a drum is bound to sound.' Kannappar bowed his head in shame.

From that day Kannappar learnt to guard his mouth. In that village the phrase 'Kannappar's drum' was used as a warning. A good friend keeps the secret; a drum makes a sound.
