Explanation

This is one of the sharpest ironic praises of the chapter. The gods, by tradition, easily attain what they wish; nothing hinders them. Valluvar says the base too act as they like. But the gods are guardians of dharma; the base are transgressors of it. The likeness between the two is at the single point of 'acting as one wishes'. Here Valluvar makes us see a difference between freedom and unrestrained desire. True freedom is bound by dharma. The base follow only their own desire. They act ignoring law, dharma and shame; like the gods they think no rule binds them.

Commentators explain it as 'those who are without any restraint like the gods' and 'those who go in whatever direction their mind takes'. The meaning is the same. History shows that those who live in this state may sometimes seem to succeed, but in the end their course is a fall. The verse tells us that our actions should be guided not by wish alone but by duty and dharma. When desire joins dharma it is freedom; when it breaches dharma it is baseness.

Another subtlety lies in this irony. In our tradition about the gods, their wish is one with dharma; what they desire is dharma. But the wish of the base is driven by selfishness. So the likeness between the two is only on the surface. A verse that seems to praise openly is in truth a severe attack.

A story

Hiranyakashipu

This is the story of Hiranyakashipu told in both the Vishnu Purana and the Bhagavata Purana. The asura king Hiranyakashipu did severe penance and received a boon from Brahma. His boon was that death should not come to him by man or beast, by day or night, inside or outside a house, or by any weapon.

Once he had the boon pride swelled in him. He conquered the three worlds and made the devas bow. 'Worship me alone as God; none may perform sacrifice for another,' he ordered. He even banned the utterance of Vishnu's name. He controlled the world as he pleased.

But his son Prahlada was a devotee of Vishnu. Defying his father's order he chanted 'Narayana'. In rage Hiranyakashipu tried to kill him: he had him thrown from a mountain top, made to be trampled by elephants, put into fire, given poison. Each time Prahlada escaped by divine grace.

At last one day Hiranyakashipu asked, 'Where is your Vishnu? Is he in this pillar?' and struck the pillar with his mace. Narasimha emerged from the pillar, half man and half lion. At twilight, on the threshold, placing him on his lap, he tore open Hiranyakashipu's chest with his claws.

Hiranyakashipu, who thought himself like a god and acted without any bound of dharma, was destroyed by a form that overrode all the safeguards of his boon. The harsh word of the verse, 'the base are like gods', finds meaning here.

The story teaches that desire unbound by dharma ends in destruction however many boons it has; Prahlada, humble and devoted, is the one protected.
