Explanation

This verse too takes the form of ironic praise. Those who know the good and bad feel worry in the heart for their own faults and for the world's suffering. The base have none of that anguish. So in outward look they seem fortunate, which is the irony of the verse. The verse in truth explains the mind of the base: a mind without guilt, compassion or worry. The good, even if they commit a single mistake, grieve at heart; they tremble to see another's pain. The base man sleeps whatever cruelty he does. That he has no anguish shows the numbed condition of his heart.

Commentators give 'thiruvudaiyar' the sense of one with wealth and also of one with peace. Either way Valluvar's inner thought is that this peace is no true peace; it is the false calm of insensibility. True peace comes with moral awareness. We learn from this that the pain of heart that good people feel is a sign of their height. When our mind grieves at seeing a wrong it is proof that the humanity within us is alive. Dharma is not to remove that pain but to make it good action.

The psychology of this verse still holds today. In society, people with no sense of guilt may sometimes seem to live at ease. Those whom conscience pricks may toss sleepless at night. But this prick is no loss; it is the spring of humanity. He whose spring has dried is in truth poor.

A story

Duryodhana's Ease

This is a portrait of Duryodhana's state of mind, from the Vana Parva and Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata. After winning at dice and sending the Pandavas to the forest, Duryodhana ruled at Hastinapura in splendour. Palace feasts, celebrations and flattery surrounded him.

The Pandavas suffered in the forest. Yudhishthira grieved for his mistake, particularly for having gambled. Draupadi wept remembering her humiliation. Bhima burned in anger. Their nights passed without sleep. But there was no grief on Duryodhana's face.

Once Duryodhana went to the forest to show the Pandavas his wealth and mock them. There the gandharvas captured him. It was the Pandavas who rescued him. Yudhishthira, thinking it dharma to help even the cruel, freed him. It was a humiliation for Duryodhana; yet no gratitude rose in him.

Tradition says Duryodhana even resolved to fast to death, and that Shakuni and Karna later consoled him. Yet he did not repent of his deeds; the shame only led him to more deceit.

The verse's 'nenjathu avalam ilar', free of pangs in the heart, is Duryodhana's psychology. Bhishma, Drona and Vidura, who knew good from evil, suffered in trying to correct him. But Duryodhana, without worry, kept his evil established.

What the Mahabharata finally shows is how this false ease led to destruction in the Kurukshetra war. A heart without anguish, not feeling dharma, fell at last.
