Explanation

This verse brings out another trait of the base: outdoing one another in vice as if in competition. When a base man meets one like himself, he does not reform him as the good would; he does more evil than he and swells with pride, 'I am above him.' Commentators say 'agappatti' means an evil, ignoble one. In a society of the good, a man tries to show himself high in dharma and conduct. In a society of the base, competition is in evil. A low contest arises among them, 'who does more harm?' To take pride in winning it is the peak of their baseness.

This can happen even in groups of friends. Habits arise among youth of seeing a friend's ignoble act and performing a bigger one to show courage before friends. Valluvar's tacit counsel is that good friendship makes people compete in goodness, not in vice. The verse tells us to be careful in choosing our friends and circle. A gathering of evil people becomes a spur to a man's evil. A gathering of the good becomes a spur to his goodness. Which company we stand in decides our future.

Valluvar here captures the psychology of crowds wonderfully. Alone, some remain restrained; in a crowd they cross limits in a frenzy to prove themselves. So society should raise its youth in good company. Schools, temples and public forums that foster competition in doing good help in this.

A story

Vikarna in the Assembly Hall

This is a sorrowful scene from the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata. After Yudhishthira had lost himself and his brothers at dice, he staked Draupadi too. By Shakuni's trickery he lost. Duryodhana ordered his brother Dushasana to bring Draupadi to the assembly.

Dushasana dragged her to the assembly. The elders seated in the hall, Bhishma, Drona and Kripa, kept silent. When Duryodhana began to insult her, his friend Karna spoke an even baser insult than his and degraded the hall still further.

As one spoke an insult and another a greater one, a contest of baseness went on in the assembly. Each thought he showed more daring than the other. In this way the evil grew.

In this atmosphere only Vikarna, Duryodhana's brother, rose and declared dharma: 'Yudhishthira, having lost himself, had no right to stake Draupadi; so she has not been won.' Though young, he spoke boldly. Karna tried to silence him.

Vikarna's voice was a lone voice of dharma in a competing crowd of evil. He was born in the evil circle, yet he did not go along with its current. It is a counter-example to the verse 'on meeting one as base, he outdoes him'.

The history tells us that evil swells in a crowd, but a single individual can resist it with dharma. A society that honours such a lone voice grows. So may we too gain the courage to speak the truth in our assemblies, families and workplaces.

To reflect on

Has there been a moment when you alone spoke for what is right in a crowd that was sliding into wrong?
