Explanation

The irony of this verse is very savoury. 'Makkale polvar kayavar', he says; the base are just like men. 'Avar anna oppaari yaam kandadhil' means we have never seen another kind so like men. Because of the likeness in appearance, the hint is that they are not truly men.

A man becomes a man not by body alone but by qualities: knowledge, love, shame and dharma. One without them, though human in form, is in truth something else. Elsewhere Valluvar says that those without the qualities of human beings are likened to trees. This verse is the ironic form of that same thought.

Commentators see this in two ways. One: the base have only the form like men but differ in character. The other: they have the skill to act the part of men, so they are hard to know. The second view rings like an alarm bell. We can feel this in our lives too: there are those who act, speaking sweetly to the eye. A person's deeds more than words, and character more than form, are the measures. At the same time the true aim of this verse is that we ask ourselves whether we are human in character.

A story

Putana

This is the story of Putana from the tenth canto of the Bhagavata Purana. Kamsa, the cruel king of Mathura, learned that his death would come at the hands of the eighth child of his sister, and wished to destroy Krishna growing up at Gokula. He entrusted the killing of newborn children to a rakshasi named Putana.

Putana came into Gokula taking the form of a beautiful, loving mother. She wore clothes, jewels and flowers, and her face showed tenderness. No one who saw her thought she was a rakshasi. She entered the house of Yashoda, took baby Krishna from his cradle and set him on her lap.

Yashoda and Rohini, deceived by her form, did not stop her. Putana, having smeared deadly poison on her breast, tried to nurse Krishna. The infant Krishna drew out both her poison and her life. Putana cried out in agony, regained her true rakshasi form and fell dead like a mountain, says the Bhagavata.

The cowherds were stunned to see her huge body. They grieved that they had been deceived by her motherly form. Baby Krishna was laughing and playing on her chest. After her life left her, the Purana says, she attained liberation, because her act of feeding Krishna bore the semblance of motherhood.

This story is a striking example of how the base look like men. A loving mother in appearance, poison within. She had to be known not by her form but by her deed.

What we learn from the tale: a sweet form and sweet speech alone are no proof of a person's character. The aim and result of one's actions show his true nature.
