Explanation

This is a very sharp verse showing the miserliness and cowardice of the base. They will not shake even a grain from the hand that has just eaten, to anyone. 'Eerkai vidhiraar' indicates a niggard who would not give even the smallest gift. Yet they will give only if one comes with strength enough to break their jaw, which is their cowardice.

Here 'kodiru' is the jaw or cheek and 'koonkai' the clenched fist. They give only through fear of blows. Neither love, dharma nor a courteous request moves their hearts. Fear alone sets them to act. This extends the earlier verse 'fear alone is the conduct of the base'.

There are two subtleties here. One, not even the smallest measure of charity can be had from them. The other, when it is obtained it comes not by love but through fear of a blow. In both states the absence of the dharma of giving is clear. Our tradition counts even a handful of rice shared with the hungry as a great dharma. What we learn is that a generous mind grows by habit. One used to sharing a little will share a lot. Each small grain we give shows the moisture of our heart. Let us be givers out of love and not those who give only under circumstances of fear.

A story

The Miser Landlord

In Tirunelveli district there once lived a big landlord who owned hundreds of acres. But he did not pay fair wages to those who laboured for him. The people of the village said that even if food stuck to his hand, not a grain of it would reach anyone else.

In a famine year, the villagers, without food, came to his door to ask for help. He refused: 'My paddy is my property; if you want, take it as a loan, and you must return it twofold.' The hungry people went back empty-handed.

Then a few strong youths of the village gathered. They brought the people together and laid siege to his gate. 'Sir, if you do not give, we shall open your granary and take it,' they said. The landlord trembled at the sight of their hands and numbers.

At once he changed his tone: 'Oh, what is this? I was just about to help you. Load the paddy sacks on carts at once,' he said. He gave not out of love but out of fear. The villagers understood this.

After the famine he gained no respect from the villagers. The nickname 'miser landlord' alone stuck. Even after his death his sons bore that ill name. Wealth without dharma did not bring fame.

This story is a living picture of the verse 'the base do not shake their food-wet hand'. Without fear, his hand opened to no one; and since he gave without love, it did not even become a gift.

To reflect on

When you give, is it love that moves you or some other pressure?
