Explanation

This verse shows another trait of the base: envy. On seeing others living well, clothed and fed, their mind does not rejoice. Instead he becomes adept at searching for faults in them. 'Vadukkaanal' is seeing 'vadu', flaw, blemish, stain. Envy is one of the roots of baseness. Valluvar set up a whole separate chapter on 'azhukkaaru', envy, in which he calls it a great sin. Here he shows its expression as a practical picture: a mind that, on seeing another's rise, searches for his faults alone.

This is found in our daily lives. If a neighbour builds a new house, a relative wears fine clothes, a friend gets promoted, to not rejoice but say 'he must have come by some means' is a small form of this baseness. We must recognise and curb it. In contrast, the noble rejoice at others' rise. The contentment spoken of in works like the Purananuru, 'food is only a measure, clothing only two garments', also serves as medicine for it. The awareness that what we need is little reduces envy.

The phrase 'uduppathoom unpathoom' in this verse points to the basic necessities of life. That envy goes so far as not tolerating even another's needs being met shows the depth of baseness. Admiring others' prosperity is culture; its opposite is fault-finding. As a remedy we can practise gratitude and joy. If we believe each rises by his own labour, there is less room for envy. If we keep our attention on our own progress, others' progress becomes encouragement and not pain.

A story

Duryodhana in the Hall of Maya

This is an incident from the Sabha Parva of the Mahabharata. After Yudhishthira performed the Rajasuya at Indraprastha, the illusory assembly hall built there by the divine architect Maya became famous. The Mahabharata describes how its floor looks like water, water looks like floor, and a door appears where there is none.

Duryodhana came to Indraprastha with his uncle Shakuni and viewed the hall. Seeing the Pandavas' wealth, fame and prosperity, envy blazed up in his heart. His own Hastinapura was wealthy too; yet the Pandavas' rise burned him.

In the hall of illusion he mistook the floor for water and lifted his garment; he mistook water for floor and fell in. The attendants laughed; Bhima and others also laughed, the Mahabharata says. It caused deep humiliation and anger in Duryodhana's heart.

On returning to Hastinapura he told his father Dhritarashtra, 'I am pained at seeing the Pandavas' wealth; I cannot eat or sleep.' Instead of admiring the prosperity that the Pandavas had earned by labour, his mind was drawn to finding fault in it.

This envy opened the way for Shakuni's plan of the dice game. The Pandavas lost their kingdom and had to go to forest exile. Finally it became the cause of the Kurukshetra war. One mind that could not rejoice at another's rise led to a ruin that changed a whole age.

This story is a clear example of the verse. Duryodhana's seeking fault in the Pandavas' prosperity was the beginning of his fall.
