Explanation

This is the last verse of the chapter. Valluvar asks a question and answers it himself: for what are the base useful? Even at a small trouble they will not hesitate to sell themselves. 'Vitrarkku uriyar' means those who sell their honour, principles, friendship and freedom.

The good, when trouble comes, give even life to guard honour. The base guard life by selling honour. They put a price on principle. So no responsibility can be entrusted to them with trust. This verse stands as the final judgement on their untrustworthiness. Commentators also take 'etrirku uriyar' as 'these are fit for nothing'. Taken so, it points to the baseness' uselessness: they are unfit to earn wealth or to do duty; they are fit only to sell their own interest.

The whole chapter has explained the traits of baseness. The last verse gives their essence: one without honour will sell anything. From this we gain the resolve never to put a price on our honour, honesty or friendship. That resolve will guard us from baseness. This verse applies to friendship too. A friendship is tested not in good times but in times of distress. One who, when crisis comes, sells himself and departs is no friend. So when we seek friends we should look for those who stand not only in comfort but in sorrow. Valluvar stresses this in the chapter on testing friendship.

A story

The Witness Who Was Sold

In a village near Palani a land dispute arose between two farming families. The head of one was Velusamy, an honest man. The head of the other was a wealthy man. Regarding where the boundary stone had stood there was just one witness: the village elder Manickam.

Manickam had at first promised to speak the truth in support of Velusamy. As the court day neared the wealthy man met him. 'Sir, I shall give the money your grandson needs for his studies. Do not testify,' he said.

Manickam hesitated for a while. But poverty gripped him. He took the money. In court he said, 'I do not remember.' Velusamy lost the land. His family grieved.

The news spread in the village. The people who had earlier respected Manickam did not want to speak to him. Money came to him; the village's esteem was lost. When his grandson went to college the words 'your grandfather sold his testimony' pursued him.

At last Manickam realised his wrong and asked pardon of Velusamy. Though Velusamy forgave, the land could not be recovered. Once dharma is sold it is not easy to buy back.

The event teaches that one who sells honour and truth in trouble loses what money cannot make good. That is why the noble do not let go of honesty even in distress.
