Explanation

This verse closes the chapter. Everything the heroine has said about her beloved comes to a clear conclusion here: he lives joyfully in my heart always. The villagers say he has left her and has no love. But she denies it. Two phrases stand opposed: uvandhu uraivar, to dwell with joy, and ikandhu uraivar, to live having departed. She says he dwells happily in her heart, while the village says he lives away from her. That contrast is the beauty of the verse.

The heroine shows firmness that is not swayed by what the village says. In the previous verse she pointed out that the village slandered him as a stranger; now she replies. There is no anger in the reply, only confidence in what she feels. She has the clarity that the truth she knows does not become false because others think wrongly. This is the inner strength of love: it need not be shown outwardly, yet it stands firm within.

The message holds for our daily lives. The assurance that the truth of our relationship is known only to us and the one we love brings peace, whatever others say. At the same time, the verse teaches us not to pass judgment on the relationships of others. The chapter on the special excellence of love ends with that quiet firmness.

A story

Sita in Valmiki's Hermitage

This is a sorrowful part of the Uttara Kanda of the Ramayana. After defeating Ravana and returning to Ayodhya with Sita, Rama ascended the throne and ruled justly. The epic says talk among the people about Sita's purity reached Rama's ears. Considering his duty as king, Rama called Lakshmana and ordered him to leave Sita in the forest. Tradition describes with great pathos how painful this decision was for both.

Sita took refuge in the hermitage of the sage Valmiki. There she gave birth to twin sons, Lava and Kusha. Valmiki taught them learning and the Ramayana itself. In this part of her life too, Sita lived thinking of Rama. Tradition says she never allowed anyone to speak ill of him.

The people of Ayodhya may have thought Rama hard-hearted, and others may have had doubts about Sita. But in Sita's heart Rama remained one who dwelt there happily. To her sons she spoke only of Rama's greatness. When the boys sang the Ramayana, they learned only later that its hero was their father.

Since this is a delicate part of the tale, tradition gives different interpretations. In every tradition one thing is clear: Sita's love did not diminish through slander or separation. Rama remained always in her heart.

This episode recalls the heroine of the verse: whatever the village says, the inner love remains true. For one who knows the truth of her heart, the world's slander is a mountain that does not move.

To reflect on

When others misjudge someone you love, do you hold to what you know, and do you give the same benefit of doubt to others' relationships?
