Meaning

The lotus feet of the Lady of the arts, with her thick tresses: the ancient Veda says, 'They are the sure truth, meant for me'; four-faced Brahma says, 'They are the crown prepared for me alone'; the gods call them 'the medicine that cures the sorrow of the mind'; and I say, 'They are the flower I wear on my head.'

Explanation

Everyone sees the same holy feet according to their own need. For the Veda they are the certain truth; for Brahma, a jewelled crown; for the troubled gods, medicine. These are all grand names.

And what does the poet say? 'I call them the flower I wear': a small flower. Yet it is the most intimate word of all. Wearing a flower is an act of love, and placing something on one's head is the highest respect. In Vaishnava temples the satari, which stands for the Lord's feet, is placed on devotees' heads in just this spirit. Let the great speak philosophy, says Kambar; I will wear those feet upon my head.

Srimad Bhagavatam, Book 8

Bali Offers His Head for the Third Step

From the Srimad Bhagavatam. The asura king Bali conquered the three worlds and held a great sacrifice. Then Vishnu came there as a dwarf brahmin boy, Vamana, and asked for 'three steps of land'. Though the asuras' teacher Shukra warned him, Bali would not break his word, and he poured the water of gift.

At once Vamana grew into the Lord who measures the worlds. With one step he measured the earth, with another the heavens. 'Where shall I place the third?' he asked. Bali folded his hands, bowed his head and said, 'Lord, place it upon my head.'

The Lord set his foot on Bali's head. In that moment Bali lost everything, and gained what is above everything. Pleased with his devotion, the Lord gave him the realm of Sutala and stood guard at his gate himself. Onam remembers him. The holy foot that Kambar wears on his head as 'the flower I wear' is that same foot.

To reflect on

Whom or what do you honour most? How do you 'wear it on your head' in daily life?
