Meaning
In the Daruka forest, before the great sages who fixed their hearts on the flower-feet of Shiva and did austerities, drinking the nectar of the glory of the Supreme Shiva, Suta - who had drunk the great ocean of learning, a sage equal to Shiva in tested true wisdom - speaks:
'Long live, O sages! In Sankarankoil of growing fame, Shiva, God of gods - the Lord who made the ages, who took this whole world as his form, who in all fourteen worlds is ever the life of every life, who is deep good wisdom, the true Being beyond even radiant knowledge - long ago became one form with Kannan (Vishnu), the protector of the world, and stood and blessed two Nagas who had eagerly done many rare penances. I will tell that wondrous story.
Hear, O sages! Whoever hears this glorious story gains the merit of a crore of sacrifices and of reading the four Vedas a thousand times; the nature of Shiva shines in him; many good riches draw near day by day; a true and firm life is his.
I will tell this story; hear it with joyful hearts. By Shiva's grace the worlds that move here are countless; the gathered universes are crores upon crores. Who knows this count? Who knows how many earths there are? Shiva knows; I do not, nor do other men. Many worthy shastras say there is no limit to the number of the great universes. The shining sky is like an ocean; that ocean has no near shore or far shore anywhere. Within that ocean, like little bubbles rising here and there, worlds gather and race through the pure space of the directions. Behold, the sight of this vast universe is full of wonder! O sages of true learning, its real meaning is the Shakti of the Supreme Shiva - behold! Has the space of the directions a limit or not? Who here has seen it? If one were to set some boundary, that...' (The poem was left unfinished.)

Explanation
Gomathi Amman is the Mother enshrined at Sankarankoil in Tirunelveli district. According to the temple purana, Mother Gomathi did penance so that the oneness of Shiva and Vishnu would be shown to the world, and Shiva appeared as Sankaranarayana, one form that is half Shiva and half Vishnu. It was the same vision he gave to the two Naga kings, Sanga and Padma, who argued over whether Shiva or Vishnu was greater. The line 'he and Kannan became one form here, before two Nagas' refers to this.
The poem opens in the Puranic manner, with Suta telling the story to the sages in the forest. But before reaching the story, Bharathiyar is drawn into the boundlessness of the cosmos: the sky is a shoreless ocean and the worlds are bubbles in it. This is the Puranic idea of 'ananta koti brahmanda', countless crores of universes; the Bhagavatam too says the universes are as countless as atoms. 'Its true meaning is the Shakti of the Supreme Shiva' - the whole boundless cosmos is the expression of Shakti. The poem is unfinished; what is given here is what survives in Bharathiyar's manuscript.
To reflect on
Bharathiyar says the worlds are like bubbles in a shoreless ocean. How does this view make our daily worries smaller?
