Meaning

Govinda! Your two eyes gaze unblinking at the two eyes of the divine lady Lakshmi, seated on the lotus with soft red petals. Lord of all that moves and does not move! To those who cherish you, you give your two golden feet. But for me, a poor one, there are every day worries beyond sixteen crores.

Lord! When will you take away my saying 'I, a poor one'? In this wind, in the bird, in the tree, in the cloud, in the boundless space of the sky, in the sea, on the earth, in the street, in every house - when will I see you, Govinda, and in joy merge with you?

So that I forget my own eyes and set your two eyes in my heart; so that with your eyes I see the whole world as you and am fulfilled; so that cruelty, forgetfulness, sloth and all such sins die and the sorrow of my heart goes and I live - Govinda, feed me nectar!

Explanation

Vishnu and Lakshmi gazing unblinking at each other is a lovely Vaishnava image - the Lord's tender glance always on the Divine Mother. Against that blissful scene is set the poet's 'sixteen crores of worries'.

The second stanza gives the remedy: removing the ego, 'I', is the way to end worry. Seeing Govinda in wind, bird, tree, cloud, sky, sea, earth, street and house is the experience of the Alvars, and of the Gita's 'he who sees me in all beings and all beings in me'.

The third stanza goes deeper: not with my eyes, but with your eyes I must see the world. Then everything appears as you. This is the summit of devotion, where even the seer becomes the Lord.

To reflect on

'Forgetting my own eyes, setting your two eyes in my heart' - if you looked at someone today through God's eyes, how would they appear?
