Explanation

'Kol' means a walking staff, a sceptre and justice. One who walks with a staff is ready to defend himself. The sceptre is the sign of just rule; Thiruvalluvar says it is not the spear but the king's straight sceptre that brings victory (Kural 546).
The danda carried by sannyasis is also a symbol of self-restraint. So this precept speaks of self-defence, self-rule and justice together.
