தன் வரலாற்றை அறியாத மக்கள் தம் பெருமையையும் தம் தவறுகளையும் அறியமாட்டார்கள். நம் மரபில் இதிகாசங்களும் புராணங்களும் "இதி ஹ ஆஸ" (இவ்வாறு நடந்தது) என்று வரலாற்றை நினைவில் வைத்தன. சாந்தோக்ய உபநிடதம் (7.1.2) "இதிஹாச புராணம்" ஐந்தாவது வேதம் என்கிறது.
ஆங்கிலேயர் கற்பித்த வரலாறு இந்தியரைத் தாழ்வாகக் காட்டியது; பாரதி இந்தியர் தம் வரலாற்றைத் தாமே ஆய்ந்து அறிய வேண்டும் என்றார். வரலாற்றை அறிந்தவனே எதிர்காலத்தை உருவாக்க முடியும்.
Explanation
A people who do not know their history know neither their greatness nor their mistakes. In our tradition the epics and Puranas preserved the past as 'iti ha asa', thus it happened, and the Chandogya Upanishad (7.1.2) calls itihasa and purana the fifth Veda.
The history taught by the British portrayed Indians as inferior; Bharathiyar wanted Indians to study and know their own history. Only one who knows the past can shape the future.
