அன்னிய ஆட்சியில் இந்தியர் பலர் தம் மொழி, உடை, பண்பாடு எல்லாவற்றையும் விட்டு அயலவரைப் போல் ஆக முயன்றனர். பாரதி அதைக் கண்டித்தார். பிறரிடம் நல்லதைக் கற்கலாம்; ஆனால் தன்னை இழக்கக்கூடாது.
கீதை (3.35) "ஸ்வதர்மே நிதனம் ஶ்ரேய: பரதர்மோ பயாவஹ:": தன் தர்மத்தில் இறப்பதும் மேல்; பிறர் தர்மம் அச்சம் தருவது என்கிறது. கீதை (18.47) தன் இயல்புக்கு ஏற்ற கடமையைச் செய்பவன் பாவம் அடைவதில்லை என்கிறது. ஒவ்வொருவருக்கும் ஒரு "ஸ்வபாவம்", தனி இயல்பு உண்டு; அதை மலரச் செய்வதே வாழ்வு.
Explanation
Under foreign rule many Indians tried to give up their language, dress and culture to become like the foreigner. Bharathiyar condemned this. One may learn what is good from others, but one must not lose oneself.
The Gita (3.35) says it is better to die in one's own dharma; another's dharma is fraught with fear. The Gita (18.47) adds that one who does the work suited to one's own nature incurs no sin. Each person has a 'svabhava', their own nature, and life is the flowering of it.
