Meaning

Foolish heart! I will tell you once more: there is no use any longer in fretting over anything. We were not born by our own choice; the beginning, the end and the middle are not in our power. See: it is by the power of one enduring God that everything in the world moves! After that, there is no worry here; hold on to freedom every day and never let it go!

When results we never imagined ripen and gather, and we see the fruit we wished for - is that not her work? Can we turn this truth upside down? Can we forget the good that Mahashakti has done? The great Goddess who rules me, Goddess of heroes, Goddess whom the gods worship, Goddess of the boundary, Goddess who orders home life and all its goods - praise her, heart, saying her flower-feet alone are my help!

We will praise her as Shakti; we will call her Murugan; we will say Shankara; we will say Kannan. Thinking that her feet alone are the eternal ground, ask her to remove all your faults, ask her to give you every greatness through devotion, ask her to protect you from hunger and disease, ask her to set you on the highest good paths, and praise the feet of the Lady who measured the world, heart!

[Mother!] If I ask for wealth, you must give it; if there is meanness in me, you must remove it; you must bind my mind to learning; by your compassion you must destroy my doubts; you must drive away the demon within that troubles me; make your grace follow me as my companion, lead me on the good path and protect me. Heart! Say 'Namo nama Om Shakti'!

What I say in song is her word too. Would she speak without purpose? Look, heart! You will receive what you asked, without doubt; there is no harm, there is God, there is victory. Let me tell you again: the primal Shakti, the Shakti who shines at the summit of the Veda, has made us like Janaka in this land. Heart! Say 'Namo nama Om Shakti'!

Explanation

This is a song spoken to one's own heart. Calling 'foolish heart!', he counsels his own mind, in the tradition of Pattinathar and Thayumanavar's poems of instruction to the heart.

The argument is simple: we were not born by our own choice, and the beginning and the end are not in our hands, so worrying is useless. But this is not passivity. 'Hold on to freedom,' he says. To leave everything in God's hands is itself freedom.

'We will praise her as Shakti, call her Murugan, say Shankara, say Kannan' - for Bharathiyar every name is a name of the one God. The close, 'like Janaka', recalls the king who lived as a sage while still ruling. One can attain wisdom without giving up the life of the world: that is Bharathiyar's way, and the Gita itself gives Janaka as the example.

To reflect on

'The beginning, the end and the middle are not in our power' - does accepting this feel like freedom to you, or fear?
