Ilamai kazhiyum pinimoop(pu) iyaiyum / Valamai valiivai vaatum - ulanaalaal / Paatae puriyaathu paalpoalum sollinaay / Veetae purithal vithi

Meaning

Youth passes; sickness and old age arrive; prosperity and strength fade. In the days that remain, O you whose words are sweet as milk, do not chase worldly gain: to seek release is what is ordained.

Explanation

The first three lines are about time passing: youth goes, sickness comes, strength withers. All three move in one direction, which gives the verse its rhythm.

The word for the days that remain is the key: time is not finished, some is still left, so do not waste it. Release here is not only about death but about being free while alive.

To reflect on

Time is not finished; the question is how the rest of it is spent.
