Explanation

In the first verse of this chapter the hero praises the excellence of love by a comparison. Only when one drinks toddy do intoxication and joy come. But love is not so; it gives great joy merely by being thought of. No act of drinking is needed; memory is enough. So he concludes that love is sweeter than toddy.

The phrase theeraa perumagizh is especially fine. The joy of toddy ends in a few hours; then headache and fatigue come. The joy of love's memory does not end; it keeps welling. It has no after-effects. In this way Valluvar, to exalt the comparison, also points out the limit of the thing compared.

Toddy is mentioned here only because its pleasure is well known. In the Tirukkural there is a separate chapter, Kallunnaamai, in which he describes the evil of liquor. Taking it as an analogy here is only to convey the loftiness of love. That is, the true joy of love is higher than the false joy of liquor.

In our lives too the joy that arises when we think of a beloved one costs nothing and harms nothing. Cherishing those memories and turning them into encouragement for good deeds is a part of a good life. Parimelazhagar explains theeraa perumagizh as boundless supreme joy. The sweetness of the words joins the sweetness of the meaning.

A story

Shakuntala's Portrait

The sixth act of Kalidasa's Abhijnana Shakuntalam shows Dushyanta's lament of remembrance. After the ring was found and the curse lifted, memory of Shakuntala returned to him. The days spent with her in Kanva's hermitage, her smile, her shyness all bloomed again in his mind.

He sank in her memory. Interest in food, sleep and governance all waned. He even ordered his ministers to stop the spring festival. Seeing his lament, his friend the jester Vidushaka tried to console him.

One day Dushyanta began to draw Shakuntala's likeness in a painting. He drew her eyes, her brows, her standing posture, all from memory. Looking at that picture he felt as though she were before him. That memory seemed to him at once nectar and the fire of having lost her.

The hero of the Kural says, "Unending great joy by merely thinking." Dushyanta's state was the same. He rejoiced seeing Shakuntala's portrait. At the same time there was the sorrow of having lost her. Memory became a honey mingled of sweetness and pain.

Kalidasa's painting scene is repeatedly performed in plays and dances in many languages. It celebrates the human power of turning memory into a work of art.

In the play, love's memory reformed him; he realised his fault. Kalidasa shows that memory is not mere longing but has the power to purify the soul. In the end the union of the two at Marichi's hermitage arises as the fruit of this remembrance.
