Explanation

In this verse the heroine's endearing anger shows. The hero has not given her a place in his heart; he has kept the door shut. But he keeps entering her heart without cease. She charges that this is unjust. In "naanaar kol" there is the mockery, "Has he no shame?"

This verse is a continuation of the previous one. There was the question, "Am I in his heart?" Here she herself guesses an answer: no, he has not given a place. Kadikondaar means he placed a guard, prevented. That is, her thought is that he has set a guard so that she cannot enter his heart.

The humour here is in showing the beloved as entering her heart like a thief. He shuts the door of his own house and enters the house of another. The picture brings a smile. But within the smile an anxiety is hidden.

In our lives too, when we think constantly of someone, a longing may arise that they do not think of us so. Telling them gently preserves the relationship; brooding on it within breaks it. For kadikondaar Parimelazhagar gives "kept a guard" and some others "removed." Both senses indicate closing the door of the heart.

A story

The Songs of Mirabai

Mirabai is a renowned woman poet of the Indian bhakti tradition. Tradition says she was born in a Rajput royal family in the sixteenth century. From childhood she had boundless devotion to Krishna. Her songs, with lines such as "Mere to Giridhar Gopal," are sung throughout India even now. The details in this account should be taken as traditional tales; scholars differ on historical particulars.

By tradition, even after being married into a royal family Mira regarded Krishna alone as her husband. Stories say the palace opposed her devotion and she faced many trials. Yet she did not give up her devotion. She went from temple to temple singing.

In her songs a familiar anger and longing toward Krishna shine. Interpreters point out the question sounding in her songs, "You are in my heart; but am I in yours?" That resembles the endearing anger of the Kural heroine.

It is natural for a devotee who loves God to wonder whether God gives a place in His heart. But the bhakti tradition believes that God always dwells in the devotee's heart and also keeps the devotee in His own heart.

Mira's songs, translated into many languages, are sung across the world today. They also sound in the music halls of Tamil Nadu. This voice of love crossing boundaries shows the unity of Indian culture.

Mira's life gives us a lesson: love can be turned into song and sustained even amid opposition. Her longing became music and reaches us even today.
