Explanation

This verse closes the chapter by addressing the moon. The heroine has stayed awake through the night, and the time for the moon to set draws near. She blesses it, "vaazhi madhi," and begs it not to set. Her wish is that the moon should stand until her own eyes have seen the one who went away.

For "vidaaadhu sendraarai" the commentators give various readings. It may mean "him who went, leaving me not out of his mind," or "him who carried off my heart without letting go." In both he is one who, though parted in body, stays in her heart.

The scene here is new. So far the verses travelled inside memory; now the poem turns outward, to the sky. Remembrance, longing and petition end in a single picture. The eager wish of the heart to see him is the high point.

The moon in Tamil love poetry is often the witness of the lover's night, sometimes scolded for its coolness, sometimes begged for its lingering. Here the plea is gentle and entirely her own. The chapter that follows, on speaking of dreams, carries on this same wish to see him, and so the final verse acts as a bridge. The word "madhi" at the end can mean both moon and intelligence, though here the moon is plainly meant.

A story

The Heroine Who Begged the Moon

In the Tamil akam tradition the moon often serves as witness to the lovers' nights. In Sangam poems one finds the heroine addressing the sea, the moon and the birds in many places. What follows is an imagined scene, a tale written to bring out the feeling of the verse.

In a seaside village lived a fisherman's daughter named Alarmel. Her lover had gone away on a sea voyage for trade. Word came that he would return that very night. She sat on the sand of the shore and waited, her eyes on the channel by which the boats come in.

The night deepened. In the east there was still no light. In the sky the moon began to lean toward the west. She spoke to it softly: "Moon, long may you live. Do not set until my eyes have seen his boat." The waves seemed to answer her with their sound. As the boat comes in, the moon and the girl seem to share one quiet vigil, which is the picture the verse paints.

Sangam poets sang such night scenes in many ways; to them the moon was at once a companion and a witness.

At last, far off, a small light showed; it was the lamp of a boat. A smile opened on her face. Even then the moon hung faint in the sky, as though it had stayed for her.
