Explanation

In this verse the heroine's memory turns from delight to pain. Earlier her beloved had assured her, "We are not two; we are one life." Today he is far and shows no kindness. She sets that speech beside this state, and the contradiction melts her very life.

"Aliyinmai" means want of compassion, and "aatra ninaindhu" means thinking much or deeply. She fears even to think of him, because thinking brings back the vows, and with the vows comes the sorrow of being forsaken.

"Viliyum" means "will perish." It may sound like an exaggeration, yet in the language of love such excess is natural, and it shows the measure of her true feeling. In the earlier verses memory was a gratitude; here it turns into an accusation.

The line also echoes a theme found in Tamil akam poetry, that a vow of oneness given in happy days becomes the measure by which later absence is judged. The more tender the promise, the sharper its remembered contrast. The commentators also note that the heroine blames neither fate nor others; she lays her grief at the door of a promise remembered, and that gives the verse its steadiness. The word "verallam" recalls the oneness of "not two." In Tamil, oneness in love and oneness with the Divine are spoken in similar words.

A story

Sangiliyar and Sundarar's Oath

In the Periya Puranam Sekkizhar tells the life of the Nayanar Sundaramurti. After Sundarar married Paravaiyar at Tiruvarur, he went to Tiruvotriyur. There in the temple he saw a maiden named Sangiliyar and fell in love with her. By the grace of the Lord the marriage came about.

Sangiliyar laid down one condition. Sundarar must swear before the Lord that he would never leave her. Sundarar prayed, and the text says the Lord told him to take the oath beneath the magizha tree. So Sundarar stood under the magizha tree and promised never to part from Sangiliyar.

But after some time the memory of Tiruvarur drew him on, and he crossed the boundary of Otriyur. The Purana says he lost his sight at once. He regained it, it is said, only after singing and pleading at several shrines. The details differ among tellings, and only the general course of the Periya Puranam is given here. Such a promise, once spoken, becomes a witness against absence, and the heroine of the verse is its quiet keeper.

Sundarar's Tevaram hymns are still chanted in the temples of Tamil Nadu, and they hold room for love, for fault and for plea.

As the heroine of the verse remembers the unkindness of him who once said "we are not two," one may imagine that Sangiliyar too held fast to that promise in memory.

To reflect on

Have you ever been hurt more by the memory of a promise than by the absence itself?
