Explanation

In this verse the heroine voices a delicate thanks. However many times she thinks of him, her beloved never gets angry. He does not scold, "Why do you think of me so often?" This, she feels, is the favour he does her. "Anaithandro" carries the sense "is that not so great?"

There is a soft humour here too. One needs no one's permission to remember; yet in her love even remembering seems a gift he has allowed. As in the sneeze verse, she binds her memory to his person.

Some commentators read the verse as a veiled reproach. Because he is not affectionate, nothing stirs in him however much she thinks, and a sorrow lies hidden in the words. The older view, however, takes the praise at face value, and in either reading the verse shows the humility of love.

In the Sangam tradition the heroine often credits her beloved with virtues he may not have, and this verse shares that spirit of generous reading. A short note on mood: the verse is spoken with a half-smile, and the pleasure it voices is modest, which is why it rings true. The word "kaayaar" means "does not grow angry"; other commentaries have "does not dislike".

A story

Gajendra's Remembrance and Narayana's Arrival

In the eighth skandha of the Bhagavata Purana is the story of the elephant Gajendra. Gajendra, king of the elephants, went with his herd to bathe in a lake on Mount Trikuta. A crocodile seized his leg. For many years he struggled, and at last he understood that his bodily strength could not save him.

In that state he thought of Narayana. Gathering his mind into one point and lifting a lotus in his trunk, he praised the Lord. According to the Purana the Lord came swiftly and freed him from the crocodile. Tradition adds that in a former birth Gajendra had been the king Indradyumna, who kept the Lord in memory, and that this earned him the grace. In both cases the central picture is of a tender patience that asks nothing in return for being remembered, which is the very favour the heroine celebrates.

The Gajendra Moksha is still sung and staged in the Vaishnava tradition, and it reminds us of the power of remembrance.

The incident joins the verse well. However long he called, the Lord was not angry; hearing the call, he took pity. What is stressed is a compassion that does not resent those who remember it. The heroine too thinks with gratitude of the patience of her beloved, who does not take offence however often she thinks of him.
