Explanation

This verse is a most delightful scene written using a Tamil folk belief. It is an old belief that if someone thinks of us we sneeze. The heroine felt a sneeze coming but it vanished without coming. She at once doubts, "Did he begin to think of me and then stop?"

Humour and longing are mixed here. Taking one small bodily event, she analyses whether the hero is thinking of her or not. In "sinaippadhu pondru kedum" the pull of a sneeze that comes and does not come becomes a picture. It is a true experience, known to all of us.

The verse also shows how small a sign can raise doubt in love. Even a small event like a sneeze raises a question in her mind. But there is no bitterness in that doubt; only a gentle wonder.

In our lives too it is natural to wish to know whether someone is thinking of us. Instead of looking for signs, speaking directly and sending a message are easy ways of sharing love. A small word "I thought of you" gives so great a joy. The word sinaippadhu also carries the sense of appearing, sprouting; this gives the graceful sense that the sneeze sprouted and vanished without appearing.

A story

Grandmother's Belief (A Village Scene)

This is an imagined scene, to explain a Tamil folk custom. In a small village of Thanjavur district a young woman named Kamala lived at home with her mother-in-law after her husband Subramaniam went to Malaysia for work. One morning she was drawing the kolam in the courtyard.

At that moment she felt a sneeze coming. Her nose wrinkled, but the sneeze did not come. Smiling, she said to herself, "Did he begin to think of me and stop?" Her mother-in-law nearby saw her face and smiled.

"What, girl, did the sneeze come and not come? He must have thought of you and run off to work in between," said the mother-in-law. "I too know the time I waited for a sneeze; when your father-in-law was away I waited just so," she said, telling the tale of her youth.

Hearing the grandmother's story Kamala's mind grew lighter. The feeling that not only she but women for generations had felt the same longing comforted her. That evening she wrote a letter to her husband: "This morning I remembered you; did you remember me too?"

Folk beliefs continue through generations as a language of love. It is beautiful not to dismiss them as superstition but to see them as customs that make relationships sweet. Drawing kolam and noticing a sneeze are subtle forms of culture.

In the reply that came some weeks later Subramaniam had written: "That morning I too was thinking of you; but work called and I went off in between." Reading it, Kamala laughed shyly. The sweetness of the scene is that small beliefs can be a game that helps keep love alive.
