Explanation

This verse raises the oldest question of love: do I have a place in your mind? The heroine knows for certain that the hero is always in her heart. The exclamation "o-o ulare avar" shows that certainty. But whether she is in his heart is her doubt. She knows the depth of her love; she cannot know the depth of his.

The subtlety of the question lies in one-sided knowledge and the other-sided doubt. The contents of our own heart are clear to us; the contents of another's heart are unknown to us. Thus those who love see their own love as measured and the other's as doubt. This natural inequality is the anxiety of love.

The plural in yaamum ulengol may be taken as including herself and those like her, but in general it is the honorific plural for herself. Such first-person plurals often occur in akam poems.

In our lives too this doubt arises with close ones. The solution is open conversation. Saying plainly, "You are in my thoughts," is an easy way to remove that doubt. The elongated vowel in o-o makes wonder and longing sound as music. The charm of the word's sound joining its meaning shows here.

A story

Rama in Hanuman's Heart

A beautiful scene comes in the later tradition of the Ramayana. At the court ceremony after Rama, having conquered Ravana, was crowned in Ayodhya, Rama gave gifts to those who had helped him. Sita took the pearl necklace from her neck and gave it as a gift to Hanuman. This is a traditional story.

Hanuman took each pearl of the necklace and bit it with his teeth to look at it. Those in the court were astonished. "I am looking to see whether Rama's name is in it; I want nothing without Rama's name," said Hanuman. Some laughed at him: "Is Rama's name in your body too?" they asked.

Tradition says Hanuman tore open his chest with his hands and showed it. In his heart was seen Rama and Sita seated. All stood stunned. Rama embraced Hanuman tightly. The scene shows that Rama is always in Hanuman's heart.

The heroine of the Kural says, "Oh, he is always in my heart." Hanuman's state was the same. Rama abides in his heart. But Hanuman has no doubt whether he is in Rama's heart; for Rama's love made him embrace Hanuman. When love is shown openly, doubt disappears.

This tale is a later tradition not found in Valmiki's Ramayana; yet it has endured among the people because it beautifully shows the peak of devotion. The proper way is to honour traditional tales while distinguishing them from the source.

The traditional form of this tale survives today in paintings and sculptures seen in Hanuman temples in North India and Tamil Nadu. Its message is that showing love without hiding is the way to resolve doubt.

Is there someone who may be wondering whether they are in your thoughts, and could you tell them today?
