Explanation

This verse too comes in the hero's voice. He says that at the moment he thinks of his beloved, all sorrow departs, and concludes that love is sweet in whatever way one looks. In the previous verse he said the joy of memory is sweeter than toddy. Here he says that memory becomes a medicine that removes sorrow.

In the phrase enaiththondru inidhe the sense comes "sweet from whatever angle one regards it." In love there may be pain and parting. But even taking those together, it is sweet, is the hero's conclusion. This shows the maturity of his love.

In the source text there is a spelling slip, enaiththonanru; the correct form is enaiththondru. We correct it here and take the meaning. Commentators give enaiththondru the sense "in every way."

In our lives too we must have felt that when we think of a loved one, worries vanish for a while. That memory creates a calm within us. Keeping memories of love in the mind even in hard days is an energising habit. Readers should note that the printed source here carries a small slip in the first word, and the sense follows the usual reading of the verse. The particle el comes in an affirming sense and adds certainty to the hero's statement.

A story

The Hero in the Returning Chariot (an Akam Voice)

In the Sangam akam tradition there are many scenes of the hero who went in search of wealth returning to his town after finishing his task. In them he sits in his chariot rejoicing in the thought of his heroine and tells the charioteer to drive swiftly. This is honoured in the akam poetics as the situation of the hero returning after finishing his work. We do not cite a particular poem here; we only explain the general character of the tradition.

Let us imagine such a scene. Having crossed the harsh path of the arid land and reached the slopes of the hill country, the hero sits in his chariot. Though there is weariness on his face, joy is in his eyes. In every moment of thinking of the heroine, the sorrow of the journey vanishes.

He tells the charioteer, "Go swiftly; my heroine will be waiting for me." The jasmine creepers and rain clouds he sees on the way remind him of her. Her face, her smile, the fragrance of her hair all appear in his mind. At the mere thought, weariness ends and new strength is born.

The hero of the Kural says, "What comes when one thinks, in any way it is sweet." This truth shows in the chariot scene. The memory of the beloved becomes the medicine that removes the sorrow of travel. Tamil tradition honours this as the hero returning after finishing his task.

The Tamil akam tradition sings equally the joy of the hero and heroine in thinking of one another. This conveys a cultural view that love applies equally to both man and woman.

Even today many who return home from other places rejoice in the thought of their family on the bus and train. The experience that this memory becomes the medicine that removes the weariness of travel is a continuation of the Tamil akam feeling.
