Explanation

In this verse the heroine openly names the foundation of her life. The separation has grown long, he is not near, and all that remains in her hands is the memory of the days spent with him. That memory is what keeps her alive. The phrase "matriyaan ennulen" means "apart from that, what am I?" In plain words she admits that her whole life now stands upon remembrance.

The word "utranaal" deserves notice. These are days she actually lived through, not days she imagined. So her memories are built on truth. In the first two verses of the chapter memory was said to give delight; here the same memory becomes the pillar that bears her life. Joy and support meet in one remembrance.

The particle "manno" sounds like a sigh, mixing sorrow with longing. The older commentators take it as an expression of lament.

A small difference may be noted. Some commentators read the verse as a boast of faithful love, while others hear in it a gentle complaint that only the past is left to her. Both readings fit the verse, and the second gives it its pathos. The phrase "ulla ulen" may also be read as "I live as I think." Its depth lies in making living and remembering one.

A story

The Memory-Tokens Sita Gave Hanuman

In the Sundara Kanda of Valmiki's Ramayana, Hanuman finds Sita held captive in the Ashoka grove of Lanka. He introduces himself as Rama's messenger. But since the rakshasas of Lanka work many illusions, Sita does not trust him easily. She asks him many questions about Rama. Only after his answers, and after seeing the ring Rama had sent, does she believe him.

Then she wishes to give Rama signs that she is still alive. She takes the jewel from her hair, the chudamani, and hands it to Hanuman. She also asks him to recall to Rama an old incident. She tells of a crow that troubled her at Chitrakoot, and how Rama took up a blade of grass, charged it as a weapon, and drove the bird away. Because only the two of them knew this event, she thinks Rama will recognise the message as true the moment he hears it.

Later poets also told this scene with feeling, and Kamban sang of the giving of the jewel beautifully in Tamil.

She also recalls how at Chitrakoot Rama once marked her forehead with a tilaka. In this way she holds in mind each small event of those days, and they are the memories that bear her life up. As the verse says, she lives by remembering the days she spent with him.
