Explanation

This verse ranks the follies and names the greatest: 'kaiyalla thankan kaadhanmai seyal', fondness for conduct that does not suit oneself. Here 'kai' means discipline or the proper way, and 'kaiyalla' means what is improper or unsuited to one. So loving actions outside the proper way, and desiring what is beyond one's station, are counted as great folly.

The word 'kaadhanmai', fondness, is important. To do an unsuitable deed wrongly is a fault, but once the liking for it grows, it becomes character. The man who has erred may reform if he grieves, but the man who loves the error is hard to reform. This is why Valluvar calls the love for the act, not the act itself, the great folly.

Commentators give two readings. One is a liking for occupations unfit for one's lineage and position. The other is a liking for evil habits that do not suit one. In both the basis is not knowing oneself. One who knows his own strength, limits and duty will not fall into this folly.

In today's life one may also see it as coveting others' lives. Copying paths to success that do not suit one's nature and failing, or seeking wealth by improper means out of greed, are expressions of this verse. Self-knowledge is the medicine.

A person who has learnt his own measure can still dream, but he dreams within his dharma, and so his dreams do not turn against him.

A story

Kaikeyi's Craving

In the Ayodhya Kanda of the Ramayana, Kaikeyi is a complex character. She is the wife of Dasharatha, king of Kosala, and loved Rama even more than her own son Bharata. When news came that Rama was to be crowned, she was glad and even gave a gift to Manthara, her hunchbacked maid. Manthara did not want her to be happy.

Manthara kept telling Kaikeyi, 'If Rama becomes king, Bharata will become a servant. Kausalya will rise in honour. You will be pushed down.' At first Kaikeyi refused. But Manthara's words slowly grew fear and desire in her heart. Reminding her of the two boons Dasharatha had once given, Manthara made her ask: 'By one, the crown for Bharata; by the other, fourteen years of forest exile for Rama.'

Kaikeyi knew clearly that this was not suited to her. She knew well her own love for Rama. It contradicted the way she had lived. Yet the fondness, the 'kaadhanmai', that grew for her desire pulled her along that road. She entered the chamber of anger and asked for the boons.

Dasharatha died, Rama went to the forest, and Bharata refused the kingdom. Kaikeyi later suffered deep grief. Her own son refused to accept her. The truth of the verse 'kaiyalla thankan kaadhanmai' shows plainly here. The story presents folly not as a single moment's slip but as the fall of a desire grown strong.

It is also worth noting that Kamban does not show Kaikeyi as an out-and-out villain but as one led astray by evil counsel.
