Explanation

The last verse of the chapter ends the picture of the fool's unfitness with a simple simile. 'Kazhaaakkaal' is an unwashed foot and 'palli' is a bed. To put a dirty, unwashed foot on a clean bed is repulsive and improper. Likewise, a fool's entering the assembly of the wise spoils the purity of that assembly.

The assembly of the wise here is a place where the knowledgeable and the virtuous gather. To speak and to listen there needs competence and character. If a fool comes, he disturbs the assembly with unsuitable speech and ruins his own standing. So he does not belong to that assembly.

This verse can be understood in two ways. One points to the fool's unfitness. The other points to the fault of the assembly that gives a place to the fool. The wise bear the responsibility of deciding whom to admit.

In today's context it may be taken as 'not going where one is unfit'. Instead of entering confidently into a debate on a subject in which we have no knowledge, to listen first and learn is humility. That is how the bed is kept clean.

In this way the chapter defines the nature of the fool and ends by showing the loss that follows him everywhere: in action, in wealth, in friendship and in the assembly.

A story

The Brash Youth and the Village Council

In a village, every year in the month of Thai, the elders gather to decide the sharing of irrigation water. In that assembly sit the old teacher, the aged farmer who knows irrigation, and the accountant who keeps the records. It is their custom to wash their feet and sit with humility before speaking.

That year a young man named Thangarasu entered the assembly with his sandals still on. He knew nothing about irrigation. Yet he stood in the middle of the assembly and declared loudly, 'All the old methods must be given up.' He barged in while the elders were speaking.

The senior farmer said calmly, 'Son, before you speak in this assembly, learn to listen.' But Thangarasu did not stop. A few other young men laughed, and he took it as applause.

That year the decision on water sharing was delayed because of him. Many farmers suffered. When his ignorance was exposed, the panchayat members sent him out of the assembly.

Thangarasu returned home in sorrow. His grandfather recited to him the verse 'kazhaaakkaal palliyul vaiththatraal saandror kuzhaaaththup pedhai pugal' and said, 'An assembly is a place to learn, not a place to show off.' The next year Thangarasu sat quietly in a corner of the assembly and began to listen.

As the years went by he learnt irrigation and became a respected member of the assembly. Humility as the first gate to competence was the lesson of his life.
