Explanation

This verse warns the fool with the Indian conviction that the consequence of a deed continues for many births. 'Orumai seyal' is a deed done in one birth; 'ezhumai' is seven births; 'alari' is mire or hell. If an evil done for the small pleasure of one birth turns into the suffering of seven births, that is great folly, the verse says.

The phrase 'thaan pukku azhundhum' is important. No one else pushes him into hell; the fool himself enters and sinks. So Valluvar holds that the cause of one's suffering is one's own deed. It cannot be passed off by blaming fate.

Commentators explain it with the belief in rebirth. Those who do not hold that belief can still take its meaning: a bad habit or wrong affects one's whole life and then one's children. For example, violence or enmity started in a family may last for generations. The fool is one who does not think of the long shadow of an action.

So this verse is meant not to frighten but to warn. Before acting, to ask 'how far will the consequence go?' is wisdom. So that the desire of a moment does not turn into long regret, patience and foresight are needed.

This is also the basis on which a society holds to dharma.

A story

The Fall of Nahusha

The Udyoga Parva of the Mahabharata tells the story of Nahusha. Nahusha was a virtuous king who by performing many sacrifices and good deeds attained the post of Indra in heaven. When Indra was in hiding because of the guilt of slaying Vritra, the gods appointed Nahusha as Indra.

The post filled him with arrogance. He desired Indrani Sachi as his wife. On the advice of Brihaspati she said, 'I will accept you if you come to me in a palanquin carried by sages.' Nahusha agreed and made seven sages carry his palanquin.

In his hurry he said 'sarpa, sarpa' (faster, faster) and kicked the sage Agastya with his foot. Agastya cursed him: 'May you become a serpent.' Nahusha at once fell from heaven and became a python. He lost all his merit through a moment's pride.

Long afterwards, tradition says, when the Pandavas were in exile, the python seized Bhima and Yudhishthira freed him by answering questions on dharma. The tale shows how long a sorrow a moment's arrogance can bring.

The same idea runs in the verse 'orumai seyalaatrum pedhai': the result of one deed reaches beyond its own bounds. Even a man full of merit can fall by pride, and so every post must increase humility, not reduce it. If we forget the far consequences of a deed, even old goodness becomes useless.
