Explanation

This verse shows, through a simile, what happens when possessions reach a fool's hand. 'Maiyal' means intoxication or madness. If one already deranged drinks more toddy, what becomes of him? Confusion is added to confusion. Likewise, when possessions, authority and wealth come to a fool who naturally lacks discernment, he loses himself completely.

Possession here is not only material; it includes post, fame, learning and power. Getting these increases the fool's arrogance. One who knew nothing begins to think he knows everything once he gets something. This is the subtlety of the simile 'kaliththaral': elation looks like joy but is a curtain hiding understanding.

The previous verse told what benefit others got when wealth came. This one tells how the fool's inner state is ruined when wealth comes. So the two complete each other.

In everyday life we see those who forget themselves on getting a small post, and those who lose humility as soon as fame arrives. In them possession increases folly. The practical lesson of this verse is to test whether we remain humble when something comes to us.

For the wise, wealth increases restraint; for the fool it clouds the mind. That is the difference between the two.

A story

Bhasmasura's Boon

The Puranas tell the story of Bhasmasura. The demon Bhasmasura performed severe penance to Lord Shiva. Shiva was pleased, appeared and told him to ask for a boon. He asked, 'Let anyone on whose head I place my hand be reduced to ashes.' Shiva, knowing his intent, still gave the boon as he had promised.

After receiving the boon, Bhasmasura's pride in his power grew. A desire arose in him to test it. He first tried to place his hand on the head of Shiva himself, the giver of the boon. It was an ungrateful act. Shiva fled in fear and Bhasmasura chased him.

Then Vishnu took the form of the beautiful Mohini and appeared before him. Charmed by her beauty, Bhasmasura wished to marry her. Mohini said, 'I am skilled in dance. I will marry only the one who can exactly follow my dance.' Bhasmasura agreed.

In the dance Mohini placed her hand on her head. Bewildered, Bhasmasura copied it and placed his own hand on his head. At once he turned to ashes. The boon he had gained destroyed him.

In this tale the boon is a great possession. On receiving it Bhasmasura gained no clarity but only intoxication. The story explains very well the truth of the verse 'maiyal oruvan kaliththaral pedhai kaiyondru udaimai perin'.

If one who gains power loses humility and discernment, his power turns against him.
